Finnish Steam Trains

Wednesday Noon, August 13, 2025

Finland's railway history is interwoven with the use of steam locomotives, particularly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The first railway line, connecting Helsinki and Hämeenlinna, opened in 1862, and it was crucial for the country's industrial growth and trade. Several locomotive classes, like the A series (4-4-0 wheel arrangement), B series (0-4-2ST), C series (0-6-0), and F series (tank locomotives), were instrumental in developing the Finnish railway network. The State Railways, later known as VR, played a key role in both operating and building locomotives.

On Wednesday, Dennis Mattson, who was born and raised in Finland, will talk about his experiences riding steam engine trains when they were in regular use. Most passenger services ended in the early 1970s. VR (Finnish State Railways) has since modernized with electric and diesel locomotives. But the heritage steam trains, like the Hr1 "Ukko-Pekka," are still maintained for special occasions.

Hope to see you next Wednesday noon for “Coffee & Nordic Culture.” We will meet in Room 116 of the Soiland Humanities Building. You may park on Regent Avenue and enter through the SE outside door.
