2021 is the 100 year anniversary of the discovery of insulin. To honour this significant milestone as well as contributions made by the University of Alberta, ADI hosted a series of seven seminars from March until June culminating in a half-day celebration on June 16th.

The ADI sends our sincere thank you to the many people who helped make the ADI 100 Years of Insulin Celebration a huge success: our excellent speakers, our volunteer ADI Trainee Working Group hosts and Twitter Takeover, the FoMD Stories (written by ADI TWG Member Stepheny Zani), the FoMD team promoting our event, and the UofA Information Services and Technology helping with the zoom webinars.

Thank you all and we hope you enjoy this recap.

ADI TWG Webinar Series Volunteers
Since its inception in 2018, the ADI Trainee Working Group members have taken a much larger role in contributing to the success of ADI initiatives and events. The ADI "Celebrating 100 Years of Insulin" is no exception; members of the ADI TWG organized and volunteered their time to host & moderate the webinar seminar series, half-day event, and Twitter Takeover (for half-day event).

Saloni is a second year MSc student in Dr. Andrew Pepper’s lab, studying the cell death pathways that govern islet graft survival and function following transplantation. She has been a member of the ADI TWG since 2019. Outside of the lab, Saloni enjoys hiking and acrylic painting.

Twitter Takeover
Carla is a graduate student in Dr. Catherine Chan's research group, identifying gut microbiota perturbations long-lasting effects on beta-cells maturation. Currently, Carla is an ADI RCC Subcommittee member of the ADI TWG, and has been an active member since 2017. When not dedicating time to science, Carla is enjoying outdoors activities and hiking trips to the Rockies.

Seminar Host
Theo is a graduate student in Dr. Patrick MacDonald's research group, implementing machine learning approaches to study alpha cell heterogeneity in human health and diabetes. Theo is affiliated with both the Alberta Diabetes Institute and the International Helmholtz Research School for Diabetes. Currently, he is the chair of the ADI TWG, and has been an active member since 2019. When not dedicating time to science, Theo is an avid music enthusiast.

Seminar Host
Qutuba is a Postdoctoral Scholar in the research group of Dr. Gary Lopaschuk. His research focuses on the impacts of cardiac insulin resistance on cardiac function, energy metabolism and structural remodelling in heart failure, diabetes and obesity. He has taken a number of leadership roles provincially and nationally to promote the community of Canadian postdoctoral scholars. When having a high jam of amazing research ideas, exercise for Qutuba is what untangles them and put them in a nice order.

Seminar Host
Jasmine is a graduate student in Dr. Patrick MacDonald's laboratory and studying the changes that occur in the transcriptome during the maturation of stem-cell-derived β-cells that contribute to electrically functional cells for potential type 1 diabetes therapies. Jasmine is a member of ADI TWG but is also involved with volunteering for I Challenge Diabetes and Kids'n'us to help others living with Type 1 diabetes live fulfilling and active lives. When Jasmine isn't in the lab or volunteering you can find her creating art, running obstacle races or playing soccer.

Seminar Host
Shubham is a graduate student in Dr. Jason Dyck's research group investigating the role of ketones in various diseases. Shubham's work is affiliated with the ADI, WCHRI, and the Cardiovascular Research Centre, and he is one of the newer members of the ADI TWG. Outside of research, Shubham likes to spend his time playing sports with friends or watching Formula 1.

Seminar Host
Stepheny is a PhD student from Brazil in Dr. Catherine Chan’s research group, where she studies the potential of food derived bioactive peptides to aid in the management of metabolic diseases, focusing on glucose and lipid metabolism. She has been an active ADI TWG member since 2018. Stepheny also volunteers to write science stories for the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry highlighting the research done at the UofA with the intention to bring science closer to the public. When not in the lab, she is enjoying her time with her husband and children.
