Newsletter for Nevada County Habitat Homeowners
Groundbreaking for Nevada County Habitat’s Newest Homeowner
On Sunday, October 10, Nevada County Habitat for Humanity broke ground on its 42nd home. The home is the fourth and final house of Habitat’s Park Place neighborhood which is located at Stennett and Kendall Streets in Grass Valley.

The happy home buyer, Shawna C. and three of her children were in attendance, along with Ellen Hagen, Shawna’s Homeowner Partner.

Shawna has already been on-site, rolling up her sleeves to meet her sweat equity commitment. She and her Partner, Ellen, have been doing touch-up paint on her new neighbor’s home, which is close to being completed. “My kids are so proud. They’re telling their friends and teachers that their mom builds houses now.”

“It is always exciting when we begin a new house,” says Lorraine Larson, Nevada County Habitat Executive Director. “It’s the Habitat mission in action. So many people make this moment possible – our donors, volunteers, vendors, and especially our homeowners. This is the beginning of an incredible journey for Shawna and her family.”
Meet Tammy Wood – Nevada County Habitat’s First Homeowner
Not only is Tammy Wood the first Nevada County Habitat’s first homeowner, she is also one of its most enthusiastic advocates. She has great appreciation for Habitat, and the home she helped build 23 years ago, and she doesn’t hesitate to tell her many friends, some of whom are now Habitat homeowners themselves!

Tammy’s love of cooking and planting flowers in her yard are just a few things that make her house a home. Recently she installed new flooring and spruced up the interior walls with a fresh coat of paint.

Five years down the road she will make her last mortgage payment – and then what? Maybe she’ll build an addition to make more room for the three young grandkids now living with her. Tammy accepts the changing family dynamic and adjusts to what life brings her. Very independent and determined, yet easy going, she takes care of what needs to be done.

Tammy loves being with kids, so her job at Kinderland is a perfect fit. Teaching and coaching the children to be kind and capable little people gives her great pleasure and purpose.

Her big family is a major force in Tammy’s life. Lots of love and support buoy the tough times. Tammy’s favorite part of Thanksgiving is “lots of gravy,” and she is most thankful for her family.

Safety hazards around your home can cause you to lose your homeowner insurance. Having a trampoline or certain dog breed can increase your premiums, or make insurance difficult to purchase. Make sure your property is hazard-free. Read More Here>

Fall is a good time to replace your furnace filters. Your heating system will be more efficient and last longer when regularly maintained with a clean filter.
