Become Their Voice

Start the Conversation
September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month—a time that reminds us why conversations about mental health matter so much.
At Become Their Voice, we believe prevention begins long before a crisis. It begins when we pay attention. When we notice that someone isn't quite themselves. When we ask the uncomfortable questions and take the time to really listen to the answers.
We also know that mental health and substance use are often deeply connected. A young person struggling with anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness or simply the pressures of life may turn to substances as a way to cope. What may begin as an attempt to feel better, escape or fit in can quickly become something much more dangerous—especially in a world where counterfeit pills and fentanyl have changed the consequences of experimentation.
Our family's story has taught us that we cannot wait until there is a crisis to start talking.
This month, we encourage you to start the conversation. Talk to your kids. Check on your friends. Pay attention to changes in the people you love. Ask how they are doing—and then give them the space to tell you the truth.
Prevention is possible. Recovery is possible. And even in life's darkest moments, there is hope.
Sometimes being someone's voice simply begins with letting them know they are not alone.
With love and hope,
Kathy & Deric

DID you see the YSS trailer at the
Iowa StateFair?
Hidden in Plain Sight:
Helping Adults Recognize the Signs
YSS’s Hidden in Plain Sight trailer is a mobile, interactive educational exhibit designed to help parents, caregivers, educators, and other trusted adults recognize possible signs of substance use among teens. Inside the trailer is a realistic teen bedroom filled with items that may look completely ordinary at first glance.
Participants are encouraged to walk through the space and identify objects, hiding places, or other subtle clues that could indicate substance use or risky behavior.
The purpose is not to teach parents to search through their child’s room, but to help adults become more aware of what they may be seeing and to create opportunities for earlier conversations and intervention.
YSS describes the exhibit as a way to equip adults to recognize warning signs before substance use becomes something more serious. The trailer travels to communities and events across Iowa, making this type of prevention education accessible to parents, schools, professionals, and community organizations.
