Dress a Girl Around the World Event
The Whitman Public Library is taking part in Dress a Girl Around the World! This campaign was started in 2006 with the motto “because every girl deserves at least one new dress.”
Whitman Public Library is calling all sewists in the community to come down and pick up one of the kits in the main lobby. Each kit contains a simple dress pattern. Just sew a dress, return it to the library, and it will be sent to an underserved girl around the world! This will be an ongoing event, so stop buy and pick up a kit or two! For more information about this organization visit www.dressagirlaroundtheworld.com.

Climate Can-Do: Simple Kitchen Swaps
We use plastic every day, most of the time without thinking about it. But scientists have discovered tiny, toxic, pollutants called microplastics all around the world. From Antarctica to the oceans, and even our own tap water. These tiny particles are a result of excessive plastic consumption and pollution. Here are simple switches we can make in our daily lives to decrease our contact with these toxic microplastics– and it all starts in the kitchen.
- Switch to bamboo or wood cutting boards. The plastic cutting boards we use to cut up our fruits and vegetables can scratch off tiny bits of plastic that stick to our food and are then consumed. Wood or bamboo is a better alternative and can even keep your knives sharper for longer!
- Use glass food storage containers. The plastic food containers we use to store leftovers get a lot of wear and tear. Over time this erosion can cause an increased amount of microplastics in our food. Alternatives like glass or pyrex are more long lasting and microplastic free!
- Don’t put plastic in the dishwasher. Even though we can make some switches, it’s unrealistic to get rid of all the plastic in our houses. However, the plastic we have left, like bottles or containers, can be washed by hand. The high temperatures of the dishwasher degrade the plastic over time.
Glass, pyrex, wood, bamboo are all great alternatives, but it’s nearly impossible to avoid plastic–and that’s ok. We can’t be perfect consumers nor should we have to. Making these simple switches can help not only protect you, but the world around you too! While the idea of microplastics can be scary, there is still a lot of research being done and much to learn about its effects. Scientists suggest a balanced diet, exercise, and plenty of sleep is always a sure fire way of having a healthy lifestyle even if there are unhealthy practices in our world that are out of our control.

Buying Local Makes Cents!
Buying local stimulates the economy close to home, helps benefit local schools and charities — and helps the environment.
Buying Local Keeps Money in Our Hives.
When you buy locally, the small business benefits. When they do well, they are more likely to hire more people, who then spend more money in the community. There's an increase in local tax base, boosting funds available for libraries, schools, police, fire and infrastructure. Local businesses also donate to local charities, helping make improvements that all can enjoy.
Buying Local Is Better for the Environment
*Less trucking and shipping (less gas use.)
*Less packaging.
*With locally grown food: better taste; more vitamins.
Buying Local Results in More Diverse Choices
From local artisans to boutique and resale shops~ let your originality shine! Don't see something you need? Ask the store owner to stock it for you : )
By supporting local businesses, we can also help entrepreneurship thrive, which adds to local prosperity and innovation. Local retailers are our neighbors who have taken the financial risk to try to make our region a better, stronger place; boosting the economy and helping lift friends and neighbors economically.
