Message from the President
The IISE OR Division Board wishes everyone a great fall and would like to take this opportunity to highlight some of our current activities. These activities, many of which are highlighted in more detail in the newsletter, include:

  • Helping to organize the OR Track at the IISE Annual Conference in 2023. The organizing committee for the track includes Dr. Jun Zhuang (primary coordinator), Dr. Kelly Sullivan (secondary coordinator), Dr. Tuğçe Işık (emerging technology coordinator), Dr. Danial Davarnia, and Dr. Hadi Charkhgard.

  • Launching a new IISE OR Division Student Case Competition that will focus on students modeling and solving a practical problem faced by a real organization. This competition complements our existing teaching and undergraduate research awards.

  • Organizing a podcast series around public sector operations research. Dr. Karmel Shehadeh and Dr. Yongjia Song are interviewing a variety of OR faculty doing amazing public sector work. The first two interviews were Dr. Laura Albert (University of Wisconsin) and Dr. Phebe Vayanos (University of Southern California).

Sincerely,

IISE OR Division Awards Update:
A New Case Study Competition and Updates to the Undergraduate Research Award
We are excited to begin the IISE OR Division Awards cycle in late 2022 and early 2023. We will continue the tradition of recognizing outstanding teachers of OR with the IISE OR Division Teaching Award. We look forward to receiving nominations that highlight the latest contributions in effective OR teaching.

We will also recognize outstanding OR research done by undergraduate students with the IISE OR Division Undergraduate Student Research Dissemination Competition with an important change based on student feedback: applicants to this competition are no longer required to submit their paper to the IISE conference proceedings. Applicants will still be required to submit a paper following the conference proceedings formatting requirements to the awards review committee.

We are also very excited to announce the launch of the new IISE OR Division Student Case Competition. This competition will focus on having groups of students work to model and solve a problem faced by a real-world organization. Dr. Talayeh Razzaghi and Dr. Samira Saedi have been hard at work ironing out the details of the case competition and have identified an interesting problem faced by a local hospital organization. The details of the competition will be released in December 2022, with submissions due in early April 2023. We hope that students at your university will consider using their creativity to help solve this problem.

Sincerely,

Talayeh Razzaghi and Dr. Samira Saedi
