Happy New Year, EWI Milwaukee! I hope you were able to rest and recharge over the holiday season. I am on Claire Becker’s newsletter distribution list and this one really spoke to me, so here it is.
As we kick off 2025, it's tempting to plan every detail for the year ahead. But let’s be real—control is an illusion we love to chase. What would it take to start the year without the pressure to control it all? What unexpected, beautiful and joyful opportunities might unfold if we let them?
A Non-Exhaustive List of Things You Can’t Control. We spend so much energy trying to control things that are simply out of our hands. Here are a few to acknowledge, not with resignation, but liberation:
• Other people’s opinions, decisions, and feelings
• Unexpected changes in the economy or workplace trends
• Nature’s timing—whether it’s a storm, a blooming flower, or life’s other surprises
• The past (as much as we wish we could rewrite parts of it)
• The speed at which progress happens (both yours and others’)
And it’s Not All Bad—Sometimes What We Can’t Control or Predict Is Beautiful. When we surrender to life’s surprises, we make room for the magic that often lies outside our plans. Let's look beyond resolutions and leave room in 2025 for something more. Here's what to leave room for in 2025:
•Adaptability: Growth often happens when we shift directions.
• Connection: The people around you are your greatest assets—foster relationships.
• Self-Reflection: Carve out time to pause, reassess, and realign.
• Joy: Life isn’t just about milestones; it’s about the moments in between.
Create the space to pause, reflect, and grow. It’s not about controlling every outcome but about building the resilience, clarity, and confidence to thrive no matter what 2025 throws your way. Are you ready to embrace the unpredictable, find your flow, and focus on what truly matters? Let’s walk into 2025, not with rigid control but with bold intention and an open heart.
Thanks Claire Becker, for the permission to be free! We all appreciate you!

Date: November 12, 2024 - Milwaukee War Memorial Center
The November 2024 meeting was held at the Milwaukee War Memorial Center. A bit of an early start gave us time for a scavenger hunt around this amazing venue lead by Sean Clark, Program Director, War Memorial Center. Mary Caye Smith, Firefly Realty, opened with the invocation. After a light dinner we welcomed panelists, Irma Doering (Army National Guard), Angel Ramirez (Navy Veteran), and Katelyn Derrick (Army) for a panel discussion on women in the military.

The December meeting was held at the Saz's State House, Milwaukee. Following announcements by Marjorie Yoshida, MMAC, and the invocation by Melinda Stuart, Smart Moves WI, we enjoyed a delicious buffet meal. A round of holiday movie trivia, an unexpected designer handbag raffle and Grinch awards were all fun parts of the evening. The very best part, as it is each year, is the Toys for Tots donations and our special guests from the US Marine Corp!

Martin Luther King Jr. Day, observed on the third Monday of January, honors the legacy of Dr. King and his fight for civil rights, justice, and equality. It serves as a reminder of the ongoing pursuit of racial and social justice, encouraging individuals to reflect on his message of nonviolence, unity, and service to others. This day is not just about remembering history but also about inspiring action, fostering inclusivity, and continuing the work toward a more just society. | |

Dog gone it!
James sat in his home office, staring at his laptop in disbelief. The project files he had been working on for weeks had vanished. The files contained sensitive company information. James retraced his steps, trying to figure out what scam he fell for or what tactics cybercriminals used to trick him. He even considered that it might have been an insider treat. One of his colleagues had shown a particular interest in the project...
James scanned his device for any signs of intrusion. His antivirus software showed no suspicious activity. He could not remember falling for any potential scams. He was about to give up when he noticed something odd. Muddy paw prints on the keyboard. It hit him - his dogs, Gertie, Ruby and Luna, had been in the office that morning and he had left his laptop unlocked. A look at the recycle bin on his computer confirmed that it was not a scam after all. His files had been deleted. James restore the files and vowed to lock his devices from now on, even at home.
