We are proud to share that RTAC‑ACC has once again been recognized as an ACC Silver Chapter of Distinction.

This recognition reflects our strong performance across all four areas of the Chapter of Distinction program: sustainable leadership, supportive administrative structure, valuable member benefits, and enthusiastic member engagement.

Thank you to our dedicated Board, our committees, and our volunteers. Your intentionality, commitment, and service to our members made this possible.

Board Member Spotlight: Billy Traurig

Position in RTAC-ACC – Board Member

Company – NC State Lottery Commission

Position in Company – Chief Legal Officer

Law School – NC Central University School of Law

Undergraduate School – Clark University

Please tell us a little bit about your company and your role there. What are your responsibilities and what does a typical day look like?

The Lottery Commission is an independent, self-supporting, and revenue-generating agency of the State of North Carolina. For 20 years the Commission has operated the North Carolina Education Lottery, a cutting edge $6 billion entertainment organization that has raised more than $11 billion for education since its launch. The Commission’s Regulated Gaming Division regulates sports wagering and pari-mutuel wagering and protects players through rulemaking, enforcement, and responsible gaming efforts. Revenue generated by sports wagering licensees is taxed, and proceeds are distributed to help gambling addiction education and treatment; support youth sports; fund college athletic departments; and attract major sporting events to the state. Since launching sports wagering in March 2024, the state has received more than $166 million in tax proceeds from sports wagering revenue.

I am responsible for leading legal, compliance, policy, agency governance, ethics, and myriad other activities of the agency. My duties include providing legal advice to senior management and the Commission as well as providing strategic leadership guidance to the CEO, other members of the Executive Team, and the Commission. The bulk of the work involves contract drafting and review, policy creation, intellectual property licensing, game rules, procurements, Commission governance, and business consulting. I enjoy this work as every day brings a new challenge and no two days are the same.

What was your career path? What drove you to become an attorney? How did you get to where you are?

Prior to working for the Lottery Commission I worked for the Carolina Hurricanes and what is now Lenovo Center where I started out as the Director of Finance in 1999 when the arena opened. In 2002, when the Hurricanes went to the Stanley Cup Finals, a large number of tickets got into the hands of scalpers and the Attorney General (then Roy Cooper) got involved and sued the scalpers to get the tickets back. Due to my ticketing background, I was tapped to be the liaison with the Attorney General’s office. For some reason, in meetings with attorneys and law enforcement leaders, everyone was looking to me for direction regarding the applicable law and on how to solve the issue. Around the same time, the Hurricanes were in mediation with NC State University regarding several lease issues. I was asked to sit in on the mediation to calculate the proposals as they were presented. While we were waiting for a proposal from NC State, I ran some numbers and came up with a proposal that became the final agreement between the parties. As a result of both experiences, the Hurricanes' team president and others told me I would make a good lawyer. I was ready for another challenge so I applied to NC Central University’s evening program in order to attend law school and stay in the pro sports world. Because the Hurricanes didn’t have in-house counsel at the time, I was consulted on virtually all legal matters while I was in law school and had open access to our outside counsel who served as great mentors to me. It was the best legal internship you could imagine. Upon graduation, I was promoted to General Counsel and eventually Sr. Vice President.

How did you hear about RTAC-ACC? How long have you been a member? What made you excited to get involved in our chapter?

I can’t remember who introduced me to RTAC-ACC, but I have been a member since 2014 and have met so many great people who have provided me with legal assistance and career advice that I decided to get involved and serve on the board so I can give back to the Association. Big shout out to Marvin Genzer!

What do you most enjoy about being in-house?

I enjoy the variety of work and having so many in-house clients with varying needs so I can be a jack of all trades and not get pigeon-holed into one area of the law. I’m also happy that I don’t have to bill hours or develop new clients.

If you were not an attorney, what would you be?

I was a CPA before being an attorney, so I guess I would still be one if I weren’t an attorney.

What are your interests and hobbies outside of work?

I enjoy spending time with my family, watching comedy, traveling, and scuba diving.

Tell us something that might surprise us about you.

When I was younger, I won several lip synch contests for my performances of Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run.”

Do you have any pets?

I have a small dog named Milo who is the best pet you could ask for.

Do you have a favorite quote?

"I will learn nothing from anything I say today. I can only learn by listening to other people." -Larry King

Do you have a favorite movie?

It’s a tie between Mrs. Doubtfire and Dr. Strangelove.

What is your favorite food or restaurant?

I love Prime Rib. I’m still looking for the best prime rib in Raleigh so please send me your suggestions.

Do you have any advice for RTAC-ACC members, either professionally or personally? This can be advice for those just starting in their career or tips for experienced lawyers.

There is more to life than work. Remember to enjoy life and family. Nobody on their deathbed ever said they wish they had spent more time at work.

You never know what someone is experiencing in their personal life, so give them some grace and treat everyone the way you would like to be treated.

More Than Networking:

My Experience with ACC Mentor Match

By Terrie Nelson

When I joined ACC Mentor Match, I was looking to think more intentionally about where I wanted to grow in my in-house career. At the time, I was doing primarily contracting work and was interested in gaining broader exposure and a wider perspective on the many paths an in-house legal career can take. More than anything, I wanted a space where I could speak honestly with someone experienced who understood the realities of navigating this profession.

What drew me to the program was that it felt different from traditional networking. I was not looking to simply collect connections. I wanted a genuine mentoring relationship with someone who was interested in helping others grow and willing to share their perspective openly.

Terrie Nelson and Laurice Royal

I matched with Laurice Royal, retired Chief Employment & Labor Legal Counsel at Johns Hopkins Health System, and from our first conversation, she was incredibly engaged and intentional. She did not approach mentorship as a passive check-in every few months. She gave me things to think about between meetings, encouraged me to explore opportunities aligned with my goals, and challenged me to think more strategically about my career.

What surprised me most was how holistic the mentorship experience became. We certainly talked about legal careers, leadership, and ways to gain experience in different practice areas, but we also talked about life outside of work, creativity, personal interests, and the importance of taking care of yourself while building a demanding career. One of the most meaningful moments for me was visiting Laurice in Baltimore during a road trip and having lunch at her home. We spent time simply enjoying each other’s company rather than focusing only on work or career progression. That kind of connection creates a level of comfort and honesty that makes mentorship truly valuable.

One of the biggest lessons I took from the experience is that careers are much longer and more layered than they sometimes feel in the moment. Hearing about the different chapters of Laurice’s career reminded me that growth does not have to happen all at once and that a meaningful legal career is often shaped by a variety of experiences over time. The mentorship also helped me approach my own career with more confidence and clarity as I continued expanding my experience and responsibilities.

I also walked away thinking differently about professional relationships in general. Mentorship reminded me that the strongest professional relationships are built through genuine curiosity about people, not just their resumes or titles. Some of the best conversations we had had very little to do with networking in the traditional sense.

For anyone considering ACC Mentor Match, I would absolutely encourage you to explore it. The experience gave me not only valuable career perspective, but also a relationship that continues beyond the formal structure of the program. For me, that has been the most meaningful part.

Member Spotlight: Kaitlyn Cox

Positions in RTAC-ACC – Chair, Women's Committee; Member, Employment Law Committee

Company – GSK

Job Title – Counsel

Law School – Wayne State University

Undergraduate School – Michigan State University

Please tell us a little bit about your company and your role there. What are your responsibilities and what does a typical day look like?

With roots older than the United States, GSK is a major British multinational biopharmaceutical company. As a focused biopharma company, we discover, develop and deliver medicines and vaccines to create value for patients and shareholders. We aim to positively impact the health of 2.5 billion people by the end of the decade.

I am an employment law attorney, its kind of like being stationed in an Emergency Room triage unit some days. There is no accurate prediction into the variety of issues I may see on a given day but to sum it up, I am a strategic advisor to the business on workplace issues throughout the employee lifecycle from recruitment to termination and beyond. Because we are a global company, I spend a lot of my day on calls collaborating across the world.

What was your career path? What drove you to become an attorney? How did you get to where you are?

Hard work and a little bit of luck.

I am the first person in my family to attend college. I think when I told them I was going to law school, they simply thought I enjoyed being a student. They aren't wrong. I love learning which is why you will see me at almost every single CLE, even though my state bar, Michigan, has no CLE requirements.

Do you want the long story or short story? My family would tell you I was always arguing… ahem, I mean “negotiating” my way in and out of situations throughout my childhood. I may or may not have held court on the playground by swings after lunch. In the fourth grade, we had to give a speech about what career we aspired for and apparently proposing to be a professional stunts person did not meet my teacher’s approval so by default, attorney was up next. I am a woman of my word and held myself to that fourth grade commitment…. But really though, throughout my life my biggest passions have been reading, travel and advocacy. In undergrad, I studied international relations, arguing on our Model UN team.

During law school, I focused on international business while having some doubt of how I was going to land my dream role of working for a global company. Leaving law school, I joined a large firm where I litigated for several years before taking a hiatus from practicing, turning to consulting at a public accounting firm in the ERISA and employee benefits, executive compensation space before I was recruited to go in house at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. After spending a couple years there, I happily took at opportunity to move down here to North Carolina, chasing my dream opportunity with a global position.

How did you hear about RTAC-ACC? How long have you been a member? What made you excited to get involved in our chapter?

I was on the Executive Board of the Michigan ACC prior to moving to North Carolina two years ago. On the same day I researched the closest chapter to me in Raleigh, I received an email informing me of my membership of the RTAC-ACC from GSK. I wanted to get involved as I wanted to carry on as I had back in Michigan in growing our chapter and giving other attorneys and myself the best resources to gain knowledge and friendship across our various businesses and practice areas. From my first event I attended at Brier Creek, I jumped at a way to get more involved!

What do you most enjoy about being in-house?

What I enjoy most about being an in-house attorney is getting to be part of the business rather than just parachuting in when something has already gone sideways. I like working with teams early, helping solve problems in a practical way, and seeing legal advice actually shape decisions. It’s also rewarding when people start to view legal as a business partner instead of the department that appears, says “absolutely not,” and vanishes into the mist.

If you were not an attorney, what would you be?

Probably a professional athlete, book editor or travel guide (not agent, like an actual guide that would tour you around some mountain or adventure).

What are your interests and hobbies outside of work?

Traveling all over the world, 36 countries and counting, running, lifting heavy objects and reading books, oh and eating, I do a lot of that to be able to run more. For those of you that do know me, I wake up at 4am to train daily. The current fixation: running ultramarathons, my first 100 mile attempt is on the books, Pinhoti 100.

Tell us something that might surprise us about you.

While speaking with people feels like second nature to me, I have to force myself to lead larger discussions and/or presentations. I hate the sound of my own voice.

Do you have any pets?

Presently, a 9 year old corgi mini australian shepherd, Zoey.

Do you have a favorite quote?

“Why Not Me?”- Rachel Entrekin

Do you have a favorite movie?

I don’t really watch a ton of TV, so I will provide my top two books I have read in 2026 so far- 'Theo of Golden' by Allen Levi and 'Running for My Life, One Lost Boy’s Journey from the Killing Fields of Sudan to the Olympic Games' by Lopez Lomong.

What is your favorite food or restaurant?

Locally, in my two years of NC residency, the tops are Brodeto, Sushi Mon and Stanbury.

Do you have any advice for RTAC-ACC members, either professionally or personally? This can be advice for those just starting in their career or tips for experienced lawyers.

Get outside of your comfort zone and say yes to every opportunity that comes your way. Even if something is outside of your current practice area, life is too short to not take chances and really lean into that human connection. Especially, in the post covid world, we need human connection more than ever to help us remember that we are not alone and we are a part of something much larger than ourselves.

2026 Spring Member Reception:

Art, Connection and Culinary Delight

by Alane Barnes

The RTAC-ACC gathered on April 22, 2026, for a memorable evening at the North Carolina Museum of Art – an annual event that blends professional connection with cultural enrichment at one of the region’s most beautiful cultural landmarks. This event is always a favorite because it allows ample time for mingling in a refined environment without being formal.

There were over 100 attendees, nicely filling the space with both chapter members and sponsors. As part of the culinary experience, guests enjoyed full bar service alongside a steady flow of passed appetizers including vegetable samosas, sesame chicken wontons and spicy tuna cucumber cups. Additional culinary options consisted of a grazing table filled with seasonal appetizers, a global taco station, and a hearty beef tenderloin carving station including rolls and fingerling potatoes with gruyere and cream. The dessert station was the final delight with dark chocolate and cherry tea cakes, mini cheesecakes of assorted flavors and raspberry coconut bites. The result was a warm vibrant atmosphere that felt both polished and welcoming. Whether sampling the menu, or imbibing with their favorite cocktail, guests found plenty to enjoy while socializing. A special thank you to Tracy Gaskins and Denisse Gonzalez for the fabulous menu selections.

What stood out most, however, were the smiles, warm hugs and the spirit of the gathering. Conversations flowed easily, with wide ranging topics from personal stories, recent news and attorney focused discussions – all reinforcing the strength and camaraderie of the ACC community. It was wonderful to catch up with old friends, and it was a pleasure to meet new ones. If you haven’t attended an RTAC social, you are missing out on something special - and we are missing out on getting to know you as well! We would love to see you at the next event and any Board member would be happy to meet you and introduce you to some new friends. It’s a fabulous group of people and the smiles in the pictures are evidence of the joyful gathering.

The Spring Social was a spectacular success – an effortless combination of delightful conversation – reminding us of the importance of creativity, perspective, and balance in both our professional and personal lives.
