Rye Whiskey Feature

Long before corn and bourbon took over the United States, rye was the dominate whiskey of choice, and especially on the east coast. But prohibition pushed many farmers from the east coast toward Kentucky and Indiana to produce a crop that was quickly gaining popularity in the US, corn. After prohibition, subsidies on corn made it much cheaper for distillers to make bourbon and ever since, rye has taken a back seat to its corny cousin. But there continue to be outstanding rye options available and most distillers prefer the spice of rye to the sweetness of bourbon. Swing by this week and grab one of these delicious whiskeys and see why early distillers fell in love with rye.

MB Roland Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey
SALE $54.99 Reg. $59.99
MB Roland Rye Whiskey is a unique local expression of our distillery in Western Kentucky. The spiciness from the rye in this mash is rounded out by the addition of our local Christian County white corn.

Wilderness Trail Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey
SALE $59.99 Reg. $67.99
Our three-grain recipe is 56 percent rye, 33 percent corn and 11 percent malted barley. Our rye mash bill is one we created for a broader balance of flavor to offset the typical high ryes commonly found. We use Kentucky-grown Heritage rye from our local KY Proud farm. We enter the new, air-dried #4 char, 53-gallon barrels at 100 proof and 105 proof for our Rye Whiskey and age until maturity in our barrelhouse.

Willett Family Estate Straight Rye Whiskey
SALE $67.99 Reg. $73.99
Boasting a folk lore style reputation in the whiskey world, the Willett Family Estate Rye is always a sought after commodity. A blend of two different rye mash bills, both being low percentage rye whiskeys, create a slightly sweet mouthfeel with floral and airy rye spice lingering on the palate. A bourbon drinkers rye through and through.

Penelope Toasted Straight Rye Whiskey
SALE $79.99 Reg. $89.99
After full maturation in charred new American oak barrels, we finished 100% straight rye whiskey in a new, freshly toasted barrel. While it can be hard to predict the flavor profile of each bottle in our Toasted Series, the deep notes of vanilla imbued by the toasting process add another dimension to our signature flavor profile. Whether you’re into a Heavy Toast or Lighter Char, our Toasted Series truly offers something for everyone.

High West Rendezvous Rye Whiskey
SALE $79.99 Reg. $89.99
Almost every other straight rye whiskey you can buy today is barely legal, with 51-53% rye in the mash bill. Not Rendezvous. It honors the way rye whiskey used to be made, with a high rye content and full, uncompromised flavor. With Rendezvous, you get a taste of authentic rye whiskey. We hope you enjoy it.

Leopold Bros Three Chamber Rye Whiskey
SALE $179.99 Reg. $209.99
For over a hundred years, American rye whiskey was commonly produced in what was called a Three Chamber Still to extract not only distillate, but also oils and aromas hidden in the grains. The resulting spirit was marketed as “heavy-bodied” whiskey, but production stopped just after World War II and the still in which it was made became a lost American tradition. Leopold Bros. painstakingly re-engineered a Three Chamber Still from old manuscripts and grew the heritage grain Abruzzi rye that was favored by Pre-Prohibition distillers to resurrect this one-of-a-kind whiskey. We hope you enjoy this rebirth of an American classic as much as we enjoyed making it.
WINE OF THE MONTH
Vietti
Perbacco
Nebbiolo
Langhe
2020
$26.99 reg. $29.99
92 Points James Suckling
Medium deep ruby color. Quite intense and generous fruity nose (red berries) along with floral and spicy notes, a hint of menthol and hard candy. On the pallet medium bodied, showing notable intensity while retaining an essentially mid-weight style. Strong, intense, and quite powerful when young, evolving to a complex and elegant, very well-balanced wine with ageing. The tannins are harmoniously integrated in the fruit structure of the wine. Long lasting aftertaste with good freshness.

Pair with hearty stew, wild game, roasted red meats and sharp, and aged cheeses.

This is a fresh and fruit-forward nebbiolo with notes of raspberries and cherries, orange peel and chocolate. Some dried flowers, too. Medium- to full-bodied, firm and racy with ripe but taut, compact tannins that run the whole length of the wine. Well-crafted. Long and even. Vegan. Drink or hold.

The Winery
Located in the heart of the Langhe hills, at the top of the village of Castiglione Falletto, the Vietti wine cellar was founded in the late 1800's by Carlo Vietti. The estate has gradually grown over the course of time, and today the vineyards include some of the most highly prized terroirs within the Barolo and Barbaresco winegrowing areas.

Although they have been making wine for four generations, the turning point came in the 1960's when Luciana Vietti married winemaker and art connoisseur Alfredo Currado, whose intuitions - from the production of one of the first Barolo crus (Rocche di Castiglione - 1961), through the single-varietal vinification of Arneis (1967) to the invention of Artist Labels (1974) - made him both symbol and architect of some of the most significant
revolutions of the time.

Alfredo’s intellectual, professional, and prospective legacy was taken up by Luca Currado Vietti (Luciana and Alfredo’s son) and his wife Elena, who contributed greatly to the success of the Vietti brand before their departure in 2023. In 2016 the historic winery was acquired by Krause family. Over the last seven year, they have added a number of prized crus to the estate’s holdings. In 2022 the winery was named
Winery of the Year by Antonio Galloni of Vinous.

Vietti is universally recognized today as being one of the very finest Italian wine labels - by continuing along the path of the pursuit of quality, considered experimentation and working for expansion and consolidation internationally.
CHATEAU PLINCE
It’s pretty rare these days that I will buy as much as someone will sell me but this one was almost too good to be true. Remember wine tariffs from two years ago? Yes it was only two years ago?! Dreyfus Ashby (Wine Importer) had to buy their regular allotment of the other wines from Christian Moueix to get their annual allocation of Chateau Petrus (Super Famous/Expensive French Wine), but given the tariffs the other wines were much slower moving, so they offered me a deal to help clear out the 2017 vintage of Chateau Plince! Great press and pedigree on this one listed below. We don’t often have deals this juicy, so just wanted to be sure you all saw it.

This wine normally has a price of $70,
the cheapest I've seen it online is $60,
we can sell it to you for $40!
This wine comes in a 12pk wood box
*case price $36 a bottle*

We were only able to get 10 of the 50 cases they shipped to Illinois. We are down to 8 boxes. Drink it now through 2030.

DESCRIPTION
Château Plince is known and recognized today by amateurs and professionals as the wine from Pomerol of great quality. In 1995, it took the bronze medal at the agricultural show of Paris, then won the gold medal in 2000. Located at the exit east of Libourne, the property of Château Plince is close to Château Nénin and opposite Château La Pointe.
Its total surface is more than 10 hectares, of which 8,66 hectares are planted in vine.
The vineyard is of only one holding and is located on a ground of dark sand largely provided in “iron” which contributes to the richness of the wine.

The crushed-berry, smoke and stone aromas are appealing. Medium to full body, round and chewy tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Shows depth and structure. Give it a year or two to soften and come together. Drink in 2022.

Composed of 79% Merlot and 21% Cabernet Franc, the 2017 Plince is medium to deep garnet-purple in color and rolls effortlessly out of the glass with scents of blackberry pie, plum preserves and kirsch plus suggestions of menthol, pencil lead and Marmite toast. Medium-bodied, the palate has a sturdy, rugged frame with mouth-coating black fruit and earthy flavors, finishing a little chewy. According to Christian Moueix, most of their frost damage happened to Lalande de Pomerol. At Chateau Belair, there is absolutely no production this year. Production for the lower parts of Pomerol was down by around 33%.
