ALEX COUWENBERG | ALPENGLOW*

EXHIBITION OPENING | SAT NOV 14 | 6-9 PM

ARTIST RECEPTION | SAT DEC 5 | 6-9 PM

Exhibition Runs Nov 14, 2026 - Jan 16, 2027

Born and raised in Southern California, Alex Couwenberg creates vibrant,

multilayered paintings inspired by the region’s distinctive visual culture—from

modernist architecture and mid-century design to music, transportation, and the

surrounding landscape.

Drawing on the traditions of Southern California Hard-edge abstraction, Finish

Fetish, and Light and Space art, Couwenberg combines bold geometric forms, rich color, and meticulously worked surfaces to create compositions that are both structured and expressive.

A graduate of ArtCenter College of Design and Claremont Graduate School,

Couwenberg studied under renowned painter Karl Benjamin, whose influence

helped shape his artistic philosophy and dedication to craft and process.

His work has been exhibited internationally and is represented in numerous public, private, and museum collections, including the Laguna Art Museum, Crocker Art Museum, and Long Beach Museum of Art. In 2007, he received the prestigious Joan Mitchell Foundation Award for his achievements in painting.

*ALPENGLOW is a reddish/orange glow seen near sunset or sunrise on the summits of mountains. Alex uses orange as a base coat for all his paintings inspired by the Alpenglow on Mount Baldy.
