LOWER SCHOOL STUDENTS ENJOY NEW MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS
|
|
At the Lower School, students have music classes twice a week, in which each grade experiences an Orff Schulwerk and Kodály approach. These approaches are kinesthetic, expressive, rhythmic, interactive, experimental, and responsive to child development. Lower School Music Teacher Molly Markstrum's classes are immersive, engaging, and edifying.
A vital instrument for musical learning at this age is the xylophone. The xylophone allows students to gain strength in cross-lateral and bilateral movement as well as build visual and auditory skills.
We are so grateful that our Lower School students can now play new xylophones thanks to the generous support of donors through the spring benefit and the Laguna Fund! We have met our goal of ensuring every student has access to building music appreciation and literacy through our Lower School music education program. Lower School is forever grateful!

FRIENDLY LOWER SCHOOL REMINDERS
|
|
OFFICE SIGN-IN/OUT
The safety of our students is paramount at Laguna. Any student who leaves during school hours must be signed out at the office by the parent or an authorized adult, and be signed back in if returning that day. Advance notification should be given to the school of any medical or other appointments requiring the student to be absent during part of the school day (8:15AM – 3PM). Students will only be released through the school office.
VISITORS
We ask that all visitors, including parents, sign in at the office and obtain an identification badge to wear while on campus for any extended time. Any items which need to be given to students during the school day should be dropped off in the office. Any classroom visits by parents or others should be arranged in advance with your child’s teacher.
HEALTHY FOOD
Students need to start each day with a nutritious breakfast at home and come to school with a healthy snack to nourish them at morning recess, and a healthy and hearty lunch. Candy, soda, and fast foods are not considered healthy foods. We discourage children from trading food from their snacks and lunches with other children. Parents are asked to bring lunch for their child only and not to share with others. Additionally, children are strongly encouraged to take home any food that was not eaten. This allows parents to be aware of their child’s eating habits. Help us to reduce waste by sending reusable lunch containers.
BIRTHDAY TREATS/NUTS
If you send a birthday treat for the class, a healthy one is appreciated. All foods provided for any school event should be nut-free and include a gluten-free alternative. Suggested treats are popcorn, juice, muffins, bagels, and fresh fruit. Please limit the quantity, and do not distribute any leftovers to other classrooms or students. Your child’s classroom teacher should be notified in advance of bringing a birthday treat so that an appropriate time for distribution can be scheduled.
|
|
NEW LOWER SCHOOL LOST & FOUND POLICY
|
|
In our quest to keep the Lower School looking beautiful and neat, we are no longer storing a lost and found box outside. All collected items will be examined for a name label and returned to the student. Any item without a label will be kept in storage and donated to a local thrift store if not claimed within one week. Please place your child’s name on all outerwear, lunch boxes, and water bottles, and contact the office if your child comes home missing an item. Encourage your child to return items to their cubby. Thank you for your help!

EMMA SCHUBERT'S HOLE-IN-ONE SPARKS LAGUNA BLANCA TO TVL GOLF WIN
|
|
By Barry Punzal, Noozhawk Sports Editor
Emma Schubert '23 made a hole-in-one for Laguna Blanca in a 211-284 girls golf win over St. Bonaventure last Thursday at the Olivas Links in Ventura.
Schubert, a senior, aced the 92-yard fifth hole en route to a 9-hole round of 3-over 39.
"It took one high bounce off the green and disappeared," coach Valerie Yoshimura said of Schubert's drive. "Emma literally jumped for joy when she retrieved the ball. It was her first ace and a memorable moment for Laguna and the Tri-Valley League.”
Emma was given an honorable mention by the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table this week for her performance.
Junior Abby Kim led the Owls with a 38 and Jayla Provance '24 shot a 39.
WAY TO GO, OWLS!

LAGUNA BLANCA GIRLS VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS AGAINST THACHER
|
|
By Dennis Moran, Noozhawk Correspondent
Danica Rux '25 sparked a second-set comeback, leading Laguna Blanca to a sweep at Thacher in a Frontier League match last Thursday night. The scores were 25-21, 26-24, 25-21.
Down 23-20, Rux tied the score with her serve, and the Owls made plays to finish the set.
Lola Hall '23 led the Owls with 10 kills and seven digs and Sarah Woodhouse '24 had seven kills and seven assists.
"This was a nice league road victory for us," said coach Jason Donnelly. "We had to deal with a little adversity as we had an injury to one of our setters on Tuesday night. Sarah Woodhouse stepped in to set a 6-2 and it was great to see our team stay composed, particularly when things were close late in games.
"Paloma Lujan '24 has stepped into our libero role and has been playing well. She's passing more consistently, playing solid defense, and learning to use her voice on the court."
On Tuesday, the Owls swept the Earwigs, 25-14, 25-15, 25-14 to improve to 4-0 in the Frontier League and 10-4 overall.
Natalie Bianchi '24 led the attack with eight kills, while Fiona Hernandez '23, Jacqueline Richardson '23 and Lily Rice '24 all had extended serving runs that helped extend leads.

DEFENSE LEADS CHARGE FOR LAGUNA BLANCA FOOTBALL TEAM
|
|
By Barry Punzal, Noozhawk Sports Editor
Carson Stewart '25 made 12 tackles, including eight for losses, to lead a strong defensive performance by the Laguna Blanca 8-man football team in a 38-18 win over Animo Robinson of Los Angeles on Saturday.
"The guys really put on a show and conducted one of the best defensive performances I've witnessed," said coach Matt Escobar. "To see a group of young men come together, not only to pull off a win but a dominant performance against an extremely big and physical team shows me that this team is ready to take the next step as a program."
Stewart also contributed on offense with three receptions for 102 yards and two for touchdowns.
Escobar said wide receiver Mike Wang '23 had a breakout game with receiving and rushing touchdowns and a punt return for a score. He ran for 107 yards on 7 carries.
"Our O-line once again blocked their tails off leading to a 100-yard plus rushing performance," said Escobar.
Quarterback Kent Dunn '23 was 5 of 9 passing for 121 yards and three touchdowns.
