👧 Supporting Whole-Child Development in Early Learning Settings

Young children learn and grow in many ways at the same time. They are not just learning letters or numbers. They are learning how to move their bodies, manage feelings, make friends, communicate, and feel confident. Big Feelings Helper (Quick Script) 💛

Because big feelings can roll in like Great Lakes waves—then calm down with support.

Try this quick “LAKE” reset (1–3 minutes):

L — Look: “I see your body is having a hard time.”

A — Air: take 3 slow breaths together (“smell the soup… cool the soup”)

K — Kind words: “You’re safe. I’m here.”

E — Engage: pick a calm-down choice (child chooses)

1-minute calm choices:

Wave Breaths: arms up on inhale, down on exhale (3 times)

Mitten Squeeze: squeeze fists tight → release (5 times)

Wall Push: push the wall for 10 seconds

Turtle Shell: hug yourself tight, then relax (3 times)

Scripts that work:

“It’s okay to feel mad. It’s not okay to hurt.”

“First calm, then we solve.”

  • “Do you need help, space, or a hug?”
