PCL’s Gower on supply chain, industry challenges: ‘The strain is everywhere’
Chris Gower, COO, buildings at PCL Construction, sums up the current construction industry climate as “incredibly challenging times.”
While the COVID-19 pandemic may have weakened global supply chains, factors beyond the pandemic are also driving volatility in the market, leading to increasing construction costs.
“The strain is everywhere,” said Gower. “What we’re seeing right now is that compounding effect and it’s made worse by an increase in demand.
Adding further complexity is supply chain issues are constantly changing and it’s not just one product that is affected.

Strikes impact May building construction values
Investment in building construction was almost flat in May, edging down 0.2 per cent to $20.6 billion, according to the latest figures compiled by Statistics Canada. The agency attributes the dip to strikes among many of Ontario’s unionized construction workers during the month. These strikes caused significant delays in numerous residential and non-residential construction projects throughout the province. Excluding Ontario, investment increased just over one per cent at the national level.
The workplace stoppages also resulted in the end of a 13-month streak of growth in the non-residential sector. Combined, the components contracted 0.9 per cent to $5.2 billion in May despite gains in eight provinces, with all three components moving downwards compared to a month earlier.

OH&S Legal Update: Government now has two years to lay charges for safety violations
Effective July 1, the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD) now has two years to investigate and prosecute construction companies, their directors, officers, supervisors and employees for alleged contraventions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and the Regulations for Construction Projects.
This change was part of a broad set of labour law amendments that passed before the recent provincial election that are now in effect in Ontario. Bill 88 also increased fines dramatically and gave direction to courts on aggravating factors in assessing financial penalties during sentencing and after a conviction has been registered.

YorkU to implement sustainable products in restroom retrofits
York University (YorkU) has mapped out an initiative to renovate more than 785 public-use restrooms throughout the campus, with the help of Zeidler Architecture and Quasar Consulting Group. The goal of this project is to maintain consistency and simplify maintenance for each restroom. To accomplish this, the university used solar-powered, deck-mounted faucets with active infrared sensing. Additionally, they sensor solar-powered urinal flushometers and sensor solar-powered dual flush water closet flushometers, which also operate via infrared sensor and automatically initiate 4.2 or 7.3 L (1.1 or 1.6 gal) per flush, based on how long the user remains in sensor range.

Canada needs to do more to attract young people to skilled trades
The latest research from the annual 3M State of Science Index reveals an overwhelming 96 per cent of Canadians agree that the country’s workforce needs more skilled trades workers, however most respondents also claim that they would not pursue a trade for themselves. This disconnect, say the study’s authors, has to be addressed since inspiring and supporting the next generation of skilled workers will be crucial to Canada’s economic recovery and addressing Canada’s growing labour shortage.
