PROGRAM LINKS

Jenan El-Hifnawi of the USGS Bee Lab gave a great talk. For those of you who missed the webinar, or would like to share it with friends, here is the link to the video of the talk. You can always visit the FOSC YouTube Channel to see the videos we have on all sorts of animals, plants and issues affecting the Sligo watershed.

The Ask-A-Bumble-Bee (AABB) program is looking for community volunteers to participate in the bee survey this summer and fall. You can find out more and get started on the AABB website. There are instructions, examples, and resources for Bee Survey volunteers.

RESULTS

Jenan shared some preliminary results from surveys done in the Spring of 2021 and 2022. These are "teaser" results since they may be affected by what other flowers were available, what species the bumble bees were, and the sample size. Further data analysis on all survey results will be done in the coming year. Still, these are data-based clues on bumble bee preferences that we might use when planting our gardens.

Food for thought until the final results are released! In the meantime, we will have to live with common rather than scientific knowledge. Jenan pointed us to the website below for suggested bumble bee friendly plants for your garden (though the site is still under development.)
