Together We Mourn & Look to the Future
Today, Ossining observes a national Day of Mourning & Lament honoring more than 100,000 lives lost to COVID-19. At 7PM houses of worship throughout Ossining are invited to ring their bells, and residents are invited to light a candle. If you post your candle on social media include the hashtag #Lament100k .

We seek to transcend our divisions and call on our community to lament, mourn, and honor the dead; acknowledge the unequal suffering; heal the nation; and recommit ourselves to the difficult work ahead.

This weekend young people in our community led a public conversation about racism, recent acts of violence, and the beginning of a plan of action for how to do better here in Ossining. Inspiring remarks were shared by many students and recent graduates. The trustees and I have reached out to community leaders, including organizers of this weekend's program, to explore how to continue this effort. A statement from the Board of Trustees about how we are responding to recent national events will be shared tomorrow morning.

Last week's village board meeting included discussions of a new events policy and associated fees. While we cannot yet move forward with a public hearing to change local laws, we will reach out to stakeholders to host a zoom meeting to get feedback on the proposed changes. We also discussed a proposed new wetlands law. Thank you to the village's Environmental Advisory Council for contributing to that proposal. This Week's Meeting
This week's meeting opens with a discussion of proposed Open Streets. During this time of social distancing, we are looking for ways that village streets and spaces can provide room for cyclists to safely spread out, and to expand outdoor dining options to support local businesses. In Ossining where generations of leaders have worked to foster a unified community that transcends our racial and cultural diversity, maybe, just maybe, we have built a strong enough foundation of trust among each other and with the Ossining Police Department that this moment can catalyze something even better for the next generation.

I look forward to seeing you virtually, from six feet away, or with our faces covered!

With Regards,
Victoria Gearity, Ossining Mayor
We are now offering month-to-month parking permits for municipal lots as a temporary measure to help people during the crisis. This will allow residents of downtown to legally remain parked in our lots during the day, while freeing up metered parking for customers.
