STAFF SPEAKING
Here is a note from the Summer Intern, Natalie Alteen:
"Hi! My name is Natalie Alteen. I am a 4th year Environmental Engineering student at UNBC. This summer I will be working with the Chamber of Commerce, UNBC, and the Pacific Institute of Climate Solutions to continue the development and implementation of carbon footprint reductions within local businesses in Prince George. I am very excited about this, as the transition towards energy and carbon reductions within the local economy has the potential to show economic, environment, and societal gains. As development in the North continues, there leaves a large space for innovation and leadership. I am happy to be working in a great community with abundant opportunity to benefit from this growing economy."

CARBON FOOTPRINT REDUCTION... CONTINUES THIS SUMMER!
The Prince George Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the successful completion of the Carbon Footprint Reduction in the Prince George Business Community - Phase Two project. We had eight businesses complete this inaugural initiative: Chilako River Ranch, Environmental Dynamics Inc., Glenbirnam Farm, Handsome Cabin Boy Tattoo, Home Sweet Home, JFT Secure Ltd., Nest Egg Ostrich Ranch, and P.S. Piano Service.
UNBC's Winter 2015 offering of "Carbon Management: The Intersection of Business and Environmentalism" course appreciated the involvement of these local businesses as they provided real and current data. In return, the students completed a full, internationally-recognized carbon footprint analysis for each participating business. The analysis determined each company's sources of carbon emissions. The sources varied depending on the business, with motorized transportation, space heating, and emissions from livestock being some of the largest. These reports also included recommendations on how the businesses could reduce those emissions, rate of consumption and energy expenses.
CN continues to be the main corporate sponsor for this project as we move into Phase Three, 1 May to 31 August 2015. The main focus of Phase Three is to help the businesses from Phase Two implement any carbon reduction strategies that are economically appealing, and begin the path to becoming a lower carbon company. The Prince George business community is further supported through two other funding sources that extend the CN funding.
Each student from Phase Two will earn a stipend, offered through UNBC's Undergraduate Experiential / Service Learning program, as they provide partner businesses with an extra report on "The Benefits of Carbon Reductions to Business and How to Achieve Carbon Neutrality." The Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions has funded a full-time summer intern, Natalie Alteen, who will work with participating businesses to not only work on carbon reductions for each business, but perhaps initiate the process of carbon neutrality as well.
We look forward to extending the benefits of corporate carbon reduction throughout the community through bringing together varied sources of funding, local needs, local resources, ingenuity, and networking. The Chamber is pleased to support this initiative as it continues to connect, engage and enhance local business.

CASH MOB
On May 2nd, the Prince George Chamber of Commerce and Hell Yeah Prince George organized a Cash Mob at Books and Company. While Cash Mobs have become a popular way of boosting support for local businesses in cities throughout North America, this was the first time a Prince George business hosted such an event. Between 10:00-2:00, shoppers "mobbed" Books and Company, many with $20 bills in hand. Feedback about the event has been very positive. "We had 20-25% higher sales than we normally would on a Saturday," says Books and Company owner Owen Lubbers, "That's good news for any business. It was humbling to have been chosen by the community, and we really appreciate the support. From our end, it was a great success." Adding to the excitement, the Cash Mob coincided with "Authors for Indies Day," which saw several local authors showcase their works at Books and Company. The Chamber plans to hold two more Cash Mobs before the summer. Stay tuned for details about the next round of nominations!
