CA SCDC Summer 2024 Edition

Hello Invaluable California Sickle Cell Stakeholders,

We are happy to report that our program is doing well as we approach the close of the first project year in our (5yr) grant cycle. Below you’ll find exciting program updates, new graphics, and links to recently published SCDC materials.

Our CA SCDC team also wanted to take a moment to recognize Sophia Horiuchi, a Research Analyst who will leave our team at the end of the summer to focus on completing her Master of Public Health at UC Berkeley. We want to acknowledge and celebrate her remarkable impact on our team and our work at Tracking California. Sophia joined our team in 2019 and has been the lead author on several high-impact publications (linked below), showcasing her expertise and contributing valuable insights to the field. She has developed into the surveillance lead for SCDC work, mentoring new data analysts and guiding them with her knowledge and experience. Sophia has also represented the SCDC program at national conferences, delivering invited oral and poster presentations that highlight our work and its significance. Her presence will be deeply missed, but we are excited to see all she will achieve in her future endeavors.

A word from Sophie:

"I am deeply grateful for my time with the SCDC program. I will miss the wonderful community working to improve the quality of life for people with sickle cell disease. Thank you for all the collaboration and mentorship and I look forward to staying connected."

What is Tracking California?

Tracking California is a program of the Public Health Institute, in partnership with the California Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control's (CDC) National Environmental Public Health Tracking Program.

We work to make environmental and health data and information publicly available, accessible and useful to a variety of stakeholders including communities, governments, academia, and private partners.

Transforming adult care for SCD in California

In 2008, only 2 in 10 adults in California with SCD received care in dedicated centers. Harnessing data from CA’s SCDC Program, the Sickle Cell Disease Foundation and the Center for Inherited Blood Disorders spearheaded advocacy efforts in 2019 to secure legislative funding of $15M for a network of adult SCD clinics.

California's Latinx SCD Community

“California was sorely lacking in data collection relevant to the percentage of Latinx residents impacted by this inherited blood disorder. We now know that this community is actually the second highest population impacted in the state.” - Dr. Juana Ferrerosa

The CA SCDC program found that 7% of Californians with SCD identify as Hispanic/Latinx and that most of the Latinx population in CA with SCD lived in Los Angeles County, Orange County, and the Bay Area
