Dear Friends of AHP,
We wanted to make you aware of the newly published ABC-AHP-NCNPR Botanical Adulterants Prevention Program (BAPP) Laboratory Guidance Document (LGD) on European elder (Sambucus nigra) berry. Focusing on the detection of adulteration with undeclared anthocyanin-rich extracts, including black rice (Oryza sativa), and food dyes, the LGD provides a comprehensive assessment of analytical and testing methods for authenticating elder berry materials.
Written by Oleksandr Shulha, PhD, a natural products chemistry expert from Cherkasy, Ukraine; Gökalp İşcan, PhD, a botanical microscopy expert from Anadolu University, Eskişehir, Türkiye; and Golshan Zare, PhD, a botanist from Hacettepe University, Ankara, Türkiye, the LGD was peer-reviewed by 17 US and international medicinal plant experts from academia, nonprofit organizations, and contract analytical laboratories.
.
As with all BAPP publications, the European elder berry and berry extracts LGD, which is BAPP’s 19th Laboratory Guidance Document and BAPP’s 105th peer-reviewed publication, is freely available on the BAPP webpage on the ABC website at https://www.herbalgram.org/resources/botanical-adulterants-prevention-program/laboratory-guidance-documents/european-elder-berry-laboratory-guidance-document-september-2026/
