Becoming a Trailblazer: Ed L., First M2K Quick-Train in Homewood Completer Finds his Future in Machining

In January 2025, Edward L. became one of the first trainees to enroll in New Century Careers’ MANUFACTURING 2000 (M2K) Quick-Train program at the University of Pittsburgh Community Engagement Center in Homewood. His decision to join wasn’t the result of a traditional referral. Edward discovered the program while browsing Craigslist for career opportunities. What started as a simple search quickly became a turning point in his professional life.

Learn & Earn 2025 Update: Hard Work is Paying Off

Participants in Partner4Work's Learn & Earn summer youth program, enrolled in New Century Careers’ MANUFACTURING 2000 (M2K) program, have recently achieved an exciting milestone. Each student earned two industry-recognized credentials from the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS) and successfully completed the Quick-Train portion of their training.

With foundational skills now in place, these trainees are moving on to the next phase: hands-on training on the shop floor. Under the guidance of experienced instructors, they will begin operating manual machine, an essential step toward becoming machinist pre-apprentices and pursuing full-time careers in the manufacturing industry.

We extend our sincere thanks to Partner4Work for their ongoing support in helping these young men take meaningful steps toward their professional futures. Their hard work and dedication are already showing results.

NCC Hosting Bi-Weekly Demonstrations with Maker to Manufacturer Participants

New Century Careers is proud to support the Maker to Manufacturer program—an initiative by Prototype PGH that empowers women, individuals from marginalized identities, and those from low-income communities by connecting them with makerspace and manufacturing training.

As part of this partnership, NCC hosts bi-weekly demonstration sessions for Maker to Manufacturer participants. These hands-on visits introduce attendees to the tools, equipment, and processes taught through our MANUFACTURING 2000 (M2K) program. From guided shop tours to live machining demos, the goal is to expose participants to real-world manufacturing skills and help them envision a path toward a sustainable career in the industry.

By offering consistent, interactive learning experiences, these sessions aim to break down barriers and spark long-term interest in manufacturing careers, laying the foundation for future enrollment in programs like M2K.

Upcoming Training Opportunity: Additive Manufacturing

Catalyst Connection and The Barnes Global Advisors are teaming up to offer free expert-led training in Additive Manufacturing this August through the DoD’s IBAS RME Program. Open to Pittsburgh-area manufacturers, the sessions include:

  • Designing for Additive Manufacturing (Aug. 18–20): A 3-day, hands-on course to help you optimize your designs and streamline production.
  • Additive Manufacturing Fundamentals (Aug. 21): A one-day overview perfect for newcomers or those needing a refresher.

We're Hiring: Part-Time Evening MANUFACTURING 2000

The role of the evening M2K Instructor is to monitor and provide technical training and assistance to individuals participating in our pre-apprenticeship program. It is the goal of all of our Instructors to see that everyone has an opportunity to learn in a safe and supportive environment while achieving the outcomes and goals as outlined by the M2K trainee manual. Training sessions are offered Monday and Wednesday evenings from 4PM to 10PM. 12 hours per week.
