CASE Innovation Award

October 22 at 9:30 am | Honoring

Abigail Lyell, Kentucky

Graves County High School agriculture educator Abigail Lyell has been named the national 2026 CASE Innovation Award recipient for her pioneering work in inquiry-based curriculum design and hands-on learning at the campus Equine Center. By adapting the CASE framework to build a custom Equine Science course and integrating CASE Small Gas Engines, Lyell drove a 9.3 percentage point increase in the Animal Systems End-of-Program pass rate (44.4% to 53.7% from 2023–2026) while expanding overall program enrollment from 278 to over 340 students. In recognition of her achievements, Lyell will be honored at the 99th National FFA Convention & Expo, receiving a commemorative plaque, a National FFA Pave the Way brick, and $1,250 in Vernier Science Education classroom supplies.

CASE Model Teacher

October 22 at 12:15 pm | Honoring

Dr. Darla DeShong, Pennsylvania

Cumberland Valley agricultural science teacher Dr. Darla DeShong (Romberger) has been named the national 2026 CASE Model Teacher for her transformative 14-year leadership in inquiry-based education, middle school outreach, and advanced biotechnology integration. Under her direction, the program expanded exponentially from two teachers and 125 students (grades 9–12) to five teachers serving nearly 1,400 students (grades 7–12), while securing over $160,000 for laboratory technology and facilities. Her data-driven instruction elevated the program's average Production Agriculture NOCTI score from 52% to 68%, and through a college articulation agreement she established, students have collectively earned more than 100 college credits (up to 18 per student) prior to graduation. Dr. DeShong will be recognized at the 99th National FFA Convention & Expo, receiving a commemorative plaque, a National FFA Pave the Way brick, and $1,250 in Vernier Science Education classroom supplies.
