Take Steps Toward Safer, Healthier Aging

September is Falls Prevention Awareness Month!

Falls can happen to anyone, but they don’t have to be a normal part of aging. This month, DayBreak is raising awareness about the simple steps we can all take to help prevent falls, stay active, and support independence.

Fall prevention is about helping people continue doing the things they love, safely and confidently. Many falls can be prevented. Taking proactive steps such as improving strength and balance, creating a safer home environment, and reviewing medications can help reduce fall risk.

Stay Active & Keep Moving

Regular physical activity can help improve strength, balance, coordination, and confidence. Activities like walking, stretching, and balance exercises can be incorporated into your daily routine and are important for maintaining mobility as we age.

Make Your Home Safer

Many falls happen at home. Take a few minutes to look around your living space and identify potential hazards:

  • Keep walkways and stairs clear of clutter.
  • Make sure rooms, hallways, and stairways are well lit.
  • Secure or remove loose rugs.
  • Install grab bars where extra support is needed.
  • Keep frequently used items within easy reach.
  • Consider using handrails on stairs.

Check Your Footwear

Proper footwear can help improve stability and reduce the risk of slipping or tripping. Choose shoes that fit well, provide good support, and have non-slip soles.

Talk With Your Healthcare Provider

Some medications or combinations of medications can cause dizziness, drowsiness, or changes in balance. Talk with your healthcare provider or pharmacist about your medications and any concerns about falling.
