Scoring a run in baseball is simple. You touch all four bases. Ke’Bryan Hayes of the Pittsburgh Pirates missed this rule in a game in 2021. He hit a home run, but as he was rounding first base, he watched the ball going over the right field wall and missed touching the base. He crossed home plate thinking he hit a home run, but the play was reviewed, and it was determined that he missed first base, so he was called out. No home run or score. Those are the rules in baseball.
It is God who speaks, through the Bible, to give specific rules for living a godly life. His instruction is perfect and correct. He also gave us the Holy Spirit to have the courage and strength to follow His instructions.
In the days of Moses, God gave the Ten Commandments. These commandments were given so that the people would know clearly and exactly how to live. The first four were about how to respond to God and the rest were about how to respond to people. When you read the commandments in Exodus 20, they may seem too hard, too much and not fair. But actually, they are clean, clear and bring life to anyone who lives by them.
When Jesus came, He said He didn’t come to get rid of the commands but to fulfill them. He didn’t erase them or change them. He came to live by them completely and then to give His life for us because we couldn’t fulfill them. When He was asked which one is the greatest, His answer was what the foundation underneath the Ten Commandments is. He said this in Matthew 22:37-39, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and most important command. The second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.”
We can follow His rules. We can know His rules through the Bible. He will help us and guide us each day.
