Security Is Just the Beginning New Priorities Shaping Public Safety Facility Design
When most people think about public safety facilities, security is usually the first thing that comes to mind. And while security will always be a critical consideration, it is no longer the only factor driving design decisions.
Today's public safety buildings are being shaped by a broader set of priorities. Communities are investing in facilities that can help support staff recruitment and retention, remain operational during emergencies, adapt to rapidly changing technology, and provide long-term value for taxpayers.
These challenges influence projects from the earliest planning discussions and reshape how MEPT systems are designed and integrated.

| Rapid City Correctional Facility New Construction | |
The new Rapid City Correctional Facility challenges traditional assumptions about what a correctional facility can be. By bringing together secure housing, treatment programs, education, workforce development, and family-focused spaces, the project creates an environment designed to support both immediate operational needs and long-term outcomes.
| | Codington County Jail Public Safety Campus | Following voter approval, Codington County is moving forward with one of its largest public safety investments in decades. The new detention center and Sheriff's Office campus will bring critical services together under one roof. From 24/7 mechanical systems to security, communications, and facility infrastructure, see how engineering is helping shape the future of public safety in Watertown. | | Mount Vernon & Lisbon Police Station Conversion | |
When the Mount Vernon and Lisbon Police Department outgrew its existing space, community leaders found an innovative solution close to home. By transforming a former church into a modern public safety facility, the project demonstrates how thoughtful renovation can deliver improved functionality, operational efficiency, and long-term value without starting from scratch.
