2024 July Buzz

Zoo Closing Early Dates

The Zoo will close at 6 pm on Thursday, July 4, for the welfare of our animals. Closing early will give zoo keepers time to get the animals inside and calm for the evening before the inevitable fireworks.

The Zoo will also close early at 5 pm on July 14, July 16, August 11, and August 20 for private events. Private events at the Zoo help fund Zoo operations, and they’re an important part of the Zoo’s annual budget.

Encounter The Wild (Animals)!

The Zoo has several exciting new animal encounters, and some updates to old animal encounters.

Now, instead of having to reserve a time for bison and rhino encounters, visitors can purchase tickets to meet these big animals when they get to the Zoo on Saturdays and Sundays. Rhino meet and greet is at 12:30 pm and bison feeding is at 11 am and 6 pm.

New encounters this year include flamingo, okapi, and Galapagos tortoises. You can feed flamingos, meet the okapi, and give the tortoises a shower! Schedule these encounters, along with otter feeding, on our website.

Andean Bear Day

Celebrate Andean Bear Day with us on July 21. We’ll have special enrichment for Muniri, our Andean bear, as well as fun activities.

Also known as spectacled bears for the markings on their faces, Andean bears are considered vulnerable to extinction in their native habitat of the Andean mountains. Some of the threats they face are habitat loss and poaching by humans.
