WesternU College of Pharmacy tops CPJE passing rates for second year in a row

In two vitally important licensing exams for pharmacists, Western University of Health Sciences College of Pharmacy (COP) graduates once again ranked among the top in pass rates.


For the second year in a row, WesternU COP students have topped the California Practice Standards and Jurisprudence Exam (CPJE) with the highest passing rate of 79.7 percent, beating out all other pharmacy schools in California. The California state average is 66 percent.


COP Class of 2022 graduates also had a spectacular showing in the National Pharmacy Licensure Exam (NAPLEX) with a pass rate of 94.8 percent, placing the College amongst the top 3 in California and the No. 1 private school in the state. Passing both exams is required to receive a pharmacist license.

WesternU CVM and COMP team up during the 2022 Veterinary Medicine Summer Research Program

Western University of Health Sciences is known for its team-based approach to health care and research. The emergence of One Health, where the health of people is closely connected to the health of animals and our shared environment, provided an opportunity for second-year College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) student Natalia Gilbert to participate in the 2022 Veterinary Summer Research Program with CVM Associate Professor Curtis Eng, DVM, College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific (COMP) Associate Professor Sebastien Fuchs, MD, PhD, and COMP Assistant Professor Manish Issar, PhD, as they investigated meloxicam inhibition of COX enzymes in Ball pythons (Python regius).

CPM and COMP news

College of Podiatric Medicine student Joshua Patrick Bungalong Littig (pictured, right), CPM faculty Drs. Rebecca Moellmer and Adrienne Estes, and COMP Department of Translational Research faculty Drs. Vikrant Rai and Devendra Agrawal published “Increased Population of CD40+ Fibroblasts Is Associated with Impaired Wound Healing and Chronic Inflammation in Diabetic Foot Ulcers” in the Journal of Clinical Medicine.


“This project was an informative and inspiring opportunity to expand my research experience,” Littig said. “It was a great boon to my academic development to work with such knowledgeable and hardworking individuals. Finally seeing my work being published was immensely satisfying.”

College of Pharmacy news

COP's Pharmacy Practice and Administration department was well represented at the American College of Clinical Pharmacy 2022 Global Conference in San Francisco in October.


Dr. Tiffany Tran presented her poster, “Rationale and Methods for the Metabolic Adverse Effects of Low-Dose Quetiapine (MAEL-Q) Study” as part of the ACCP MeRIT Program.


Drs. Moses Chow and Sheryl Chow presented a poster of their clinical study titled “Comparison of Pharmacokinetics of Vardenafil Administered Using an Intranasal Spray Formulation Vs. Single 10mg Oral Tablet." Other co-authors of the study are Dr. Jeffrey Wang from PSD, Amy Paik, Stan Louie, Airani Sathananthan, and Stephanie White.


Dr. Hyma Gogineni, on behalf of her team (faculty Drs. Jeff Wang, Patrick Chan, Ying Huang, WesternU alum Dr. Hajer Ibrahim, and COP student Angela Mercado), she received the Top Trainee Research in Progress for the study “Impact of Bariatric Surgery on Pharmacokinetics of Psychotropic Medications” by the Adult Medicine Walk Rounds Committee.


Dr. Sheryl Chow was an invited speaker for the presentation “Telepharmacy Managing Medical Safety and Adherence in Heart Failure Patients“ in the session titled "Update on Heart Failure Drug Therapies: 2022 Edition."


Dr. Anne Kugler served as a poster judge for the Endocrine and Metabolism PRN.
