Hello!

Summer may be winding down, but the excitement is just beginning! Back-to-school season is here! As campus comes back to life and a new academic year gets underway, we hope you’re making the most of these final days of summer.

August is also National Make-A-Will Month. It's a reminder to update your will or create one if needed. El Camino College Foundation's Legacy Circle recognizes individuals and families who have designated a gift to the Foundation through their estate planning. If you have included the El Camino College Foundation in your will, please inform us. The Foundation team is available to work with you to create a meaningful legacy gift that will directly impact El Camino students for years to come.

Here’s to new opportunities and another year of making dreams possible for our students!

Warmly,

Andrea Sala | Executive Director

Lauren Sanchez Bezos Dedicates Her New Book to Former El Camino Journalism Professor, Lori Medigovich

Before all her fame and success, Lauren Sánchez Bezos was a journalism student at El Camino College, writing under her given name, Wendy L. Sánchez.

As a student in 1991, Sánchez Bezos wrote for El Camino’s student newspaper, the Warwhoop. Her journalism professor, Lori Medigovich, recognized her talent and encouraged her to transfer to USC. Medigovich also helped Sánchez Bezos discover she had dyslexia by suggesting she get tested at El Camino's Special Resource Center. “I had spent my whole life thinking I was stupid...I learned I just think differently." Sánchez Bezos is now an advocate for dyslexia awareness.

Years later, Sánchez Bezos honored her former professor by dedicating her second children’s book, The Fly Who Flew Under the Sea, to Medigovich, writing, “the teacher who helped me take flight and for every teacher who helps kids do the same.”

From El Camino College to the newsroom to the center of space, Sánchez Bezos’ journey is a powerful reminder of how a dedicated teacher and an educational opportunity can help a student take flight. Read the full Peninsula Magazine article HERE.

Student Spotlight: Danielle Davis Begins Her Journey at Clark Atlanta University with a Little Help from the ECC Foundation

Danielle “Dani” Davis has dreamed of attending Clark Atlanta University for years. After being accepted three times since 2023, financial circumstances always prevented her from making the move to Atlanta. Rather than give up, Dani chose another path—enrolling full-time at El Camino College while working part-time at In-N-Out and balancing classes, scholarship applications, and the transfer process.

This year, Dani graduated from El Camino College with honors and was accepted to Clark Atlanta again as a transfer student. She also earned several scholarships to help fund her education, like the Ken Brown Memorial Scholarship through the ECC Foundation, which gets her one step closer to becoming the first HBCU graduate in her family.

Dani’s journey is a testament to perseverance. When her original plan didn’t work out, she pivoted, kept working hard, and continued moving forward. She never gave up on her dream and is now living her best life across the country at CAU in Georgia!
