Travis will bring the final message in his series on the I AM statements in John: "I Am the True Vine," based in John 15:1-17. We will also observe communion since it is the first Sunday of the month. If you cannot worship with us in person, please watch online at vintonbaptistchurch.org.

Food Pantry Donations

Needed for Holiday Boxes

The Food Pantry has requested donations of the following items, which will be used for both Thanksgiving and Christmas food boxes:

  • 1 lb. canned hams (shelf-stable, NOT refrigerated)
  • canned green beans
  • canned corn
  • canned cranberry sauce
  • canned gravy
  • mashed potatoes
  • macaroni & cheese
  • stuffing/dressing mix
  • canned yams

Please note: They prefer that all canned vegetables be 15-16 oz. cans (NOT the huge cans, which are more difficult to handle). The shelf-stable canned hams are generally available at Wal-Mart, Dollar Tree, Roses, and sometimes Dollar General. Thanksgiving food boxes will be distributed November 9th, 16th, and 23rd. Christmas food boxes will be distributed December 7th, 14th, and 21st. Donations can be dropped off at the Missions Tables. Thank you for blessing our community with these extra holiday foods!

World Hunger Offering

The World Hunger Offering has begun, and our church goal is $1,700. So far we have received $525. Please use a World Hunger envelope or mark your gift accordingly. Your gifts support those who are struggling with food insecurity and even starvation worldwide. Thank you for your gifts.

Bible Reading Plan

We will finish the book of Romans this Friday and move on to 1 Corinthians from there. Just a few thoughts as we wrap up Romans:

  • Remember, this letter was written to the church(es) in Rome, which Paul had not founded, nor even visited as of the writing of the letter.
  • Because Paul was not the pastor of these church(es), he uses the letter to introduce himself and his mission, as well as his plans to come to Rome (ch. 15) and an explanation of some of the theology that he thought would be helpful to the Christians in Rome.
  • The letter was apparently entrusted to Phoebe to deliver (ch. 16). Phoebe is presented as a deacon (diakonon) and a benefactor of Paul.

When you get to chapter 16 on Friday, you will also find that even though Paul has not visited the church(es) in Rome, he knows or has worked with numerous people who are apparently at Rome during the writing of this letter. He mentions specifically Prisca (aka Priscilla) & Aquila, Epaenetus, Mary, Andronicus & Junia, Ampliatus, Urbanus, Stachys, Apelles, Aristobulus, Herodion, Narcissus, Tryphaena & Tryphosa, Persis, Rufus and his mother, Asyncritus, Phlegon, Hermes, Patrobas, Hermas, Philologus, Julia, Nereus and his sister, and Olympas. Within this list are nine names understood to represent women. One, Junia, is called an apostle. (See Smyth & Helwys Bible Commentary: Romans, available in the church library, for more info.) This list is such an encouragement to me - to know that both men and women who served faithfully in the early church were recognized, appreciated, and remembered by Paul and his fellow Christians. -- Kim
