Leadership Team Updates

Dear St. Alphonsus Families,

Welcome to Holy Week! This is a very special week in our faith and in our school. We will kick things off with Soup & Substance tomorrow, a middle school tradition that began last year. Middle school students receive a special candlelit luncheon, enjoy a peasant meal of soup, salad, and bread, and hear a talk from Father Kevin about Holy Week. Afterwards, they finish up their practice for Living Stations of the Cross.

Speaking of that, please make plans to join us either on Tuesday at 6:00pm or on Wednesday at 2:00pm for Living Stations of the Cross. You can find more details on this below. Our middle school students have been working very hard and we are all looking forward to partaking in this solemn tradition this week.

A couple of other points of note:

  • We have a pizza lunch this week, but ALSO, the pizza lunch forms for our next pizza lunch which takes place right after break are due this week. Forms are due by Wednesday morning, no exceptions. We are also looking for a few more volunteers to help serve pizza at Wednesday's lunch, and we will need additional volunteers to serve the pizza lunch on Tuesday, April 9. You can sign up here and find more details below.

  • There will NOT be a newsletter on Monday, April 8. Since we will have been on break, we will have no news to report. Th next school newsletter will be Monday, April 15.

Lastly, don't forget that THIS Thursday, March 28 is a full day off of school, not an early dismissal as was previously scheduled. We are off on Holy Thursday and are excited for everyone to start their spring break!

Be sure to check out all the great stuff in this week's newsletter, including a recap of the Milwaukee Wave game, service opportunities at the parish auction, a special display at the library for the solar eclipse, and a story about a St. Al's alum with a Hollywood career!

Have a fantastic week!

Best regards,

Ms. Parey, Principal

Mrs. Schermetzler & Mrs. Bruhn, Leadership Team

Middle School Minutes: A Solar Eclipse of the Heart

8th Grade Students have an Eclipse Display up at the Greendale Public Library!

The display was designed to provide information to the public about the upcoming solar eclipse on April 8.

Students worked together in three groups, with each group working on a different aspect of the display. One group created an informational poster that discusses when the eclipse is happening, safe ways to view the eclipse, and a link to more information. One group created a model of the solar eclipse, to explain how the earth and the moon & sun are arranged when the eclipse is happening. The third group created a safety viewer out of a cereal box and included instructions for people on how to make their own!

Stop by the Greendale Public Library to check out the display and don't forget to mark your calendars for the upcoming eclipse on April 8.

Fun at the Milwaukee Wave Game!

Friday was our Home & School Outing at the Milwaukee Wave Game and it was a blast!

St. Alphonsus was the featured non-profit of the game and Mrs. Schermetzler got to do the first kick (video below). It was great to see so many families out together!

Thank you especially to our wonderful Home & School Association volunteers who made this event a success--in particular thank you to the Williams and the Klimczak Families, as well as Vickie Major, who helped us sell 50/50 raffle tickets.

Make plans to join us this summer for a Milwaukee Milkmen game! Details are coming soon!

Dine Out Nights - the easiest and most delicious fundraisers around.

Dine Out Night Co-Chair Needed!

Looking for a fun and easy way to volunteer your time for our school? Come on board as a co-chair for Dine Out Nights. This is one of our most popular fundraisers and it costs us nothing to run but a little bit of time by the co-chairs.

The co-chairs will book the Dine Out Nights in the summer and then advertise them throughout the year via the newsletter. All the work is done from your computer and on your schedule, so it's a great way to volunteer if you can't make it into the building during the school day. We have one chair in place and are looking for someone to work with that person and split the job. We have lots of documentation on how to run this fundraiser so you'll be able to jump right in.

Home and School is parent-run and all of the funds raised directly benefit our students. In the past Home and School funds have bought new smartboards, added safety equipment to the building, replaced the playground surface and renovated the science lab. We need volunteers to help make the fundraisers happen, and this would be a great way for you to join in!

If you are interested in being a co-chair for Dine Out Nights, please contact Holly Lewandowski.

SCRIP Makes $ense!

Hello from your SCRIP coordinators!

In the past few weeks, there has been an article in the church bulletin called: Fitting the Pieces Together. Last week, it focused on our school and the need for financial support.

HOW CAN YOU HELP? You already pay tuition, and have probably helped with the annual appeal. I am appealing to you to start purchasing SCRIP gift cards and get in the habit of using them. Currently, there are 6 active families who use SCRIP which accounts for only 25% of the sales. The program is being kept alive by parishioners who believe in the school needs.

My co-chair Mike and I are always happy to help you with your questions and get you started with helping your school. You can find more information on how to sign-up below.

Happy Easter! Vickie Major, SCRIP Coordinator

Signing up for SCRIP is easy, and there is even an app to use!

Register here, using the enrollment code 855F1LF31943. You can also check out our Enrollment Forms and FAQ on our school website. If you would like to order via paper order form, you can find that here.

Any questions, please call or email our SCRIP coordinator, Vickie Major at 414-704-0526 or via email here.

Christian Formation Updates & Opportunities

Want to ignite the faith of your family this summer? Want them to encounter Jesus, the Blessed Mother and have fun as well?

Then sign your family up for Totus Tuus! Totus Tuus has two distinct parts - one for younger kids and one for middle and high schoolers. The younger kids come during the day and have a group of Totus Tuus Missionaries lead them in an action packed vacation Bible camp! The missionaries are young adults who are on fire with their faith!

Then for the older kids, the missionaries (same ones mentioned above) engage them at night to grow in their faith as well - the older kids will do things more appropriate to middle and high schoolers.

St. Al's will be co-hosting this with St. Martin of Tours and it will be held at St. Martin of Tours parish.

This will be from July 8th through July 12th from K5-5th grade from 9 a.m. -3 p.m. And it will be from July 7th through July 11th from 7pm-9pm for 6th through 12th grades.

Want to learn more about Totus Tuus? Check out the national website! To sign up, click here.

In Matthew 25, Jesus is very clear that we are called, no, commanded to love those in need and to serve them. Somehow, by doing so, we are able to serve Jesus. He is in disguise.

And if I could bring everyone to one place to show them what it looks like to serve as if you are serving Jesus Himself, I would bring you all to the Kinship Community Food Center! It is a food pantry unlike any other one I have ever seen. They operate more like a grocery store than a food pantry. People go to different stations to choose the food they want. It affords a real dignity to everyone.

And, it's a place where generosity reigns.

Come and check it out! Please consider joining us on April 13, 2024. It's an amazing opportunity to serve Jesus disguised in the poor. To sign up or to learn more about serving, check out the sign up genius.

Parish Auction Updates

Registration Now Open for the Parish Auction!

On May 10, 2024, we will Roll Out the Red Carpet for the 23rd annual St. Alphonsus Parish benefit auction, and we invite you to join us!

The auction is the only parish fundraiser that benefits all of St. Alphonsus’ ministries, including our school, Christian formation programs, adult education, community outreach (food pantry, community meal programs, giving tree, etc.), support groups and more.

It is sure to be a great evening, so please consider joining us! Registration is now open--register online here!

We also need student volunteers to serve at the event!

This counts as service hours for the kids, saves St. Al’s the money we’d otherwise have to pay for adult waitstaff, and is a lot of fun!

Students should arrive at 4:30 and will be done between 9:30 and 10:00. Students will assist with table and other set up. They will serve appetizers to guests during cocktail hour. After that, they will work in the dining room, clearing salad plates, serving entrees, bringing coffee carafes to the tables and clearing plates, glasses, silverware, etc. at the end of the meal.

We will feed students dinner shortly after arrival. Students should wear a plain, white shirt or blouse and black pants or skirt with comfortable, closed toe shoes.

Students in grades 4-8 are eligible to serve. High schoolers are also welcome. Sign up here!

Do you have items for the newsletter? To submit them or for questions and submission guidelines, please contact Amy Schermetzler.

Please note that submissions are due by 12:00pm Fridays.
