October 2026

Dear Valued Partners and Clients,

Every season of life brings opportunities to grow, adapt, and find new sources of strength. This month, we're exploring the many ways we can support our well-being, from caring for our emotional health and planning for the future to nurturing brain health as we age.

Watch a short video featuring Fabio, a Mental Health Specialist on our Independence at Home (IAH) team, as he shares insights on navigating grief and life's transitions. You'll also find resources on where to get free guidance on selecting a health insurance plan, and information on how to participate in UCLA Health research study on cognitive wellness, nutrition, and healthy aging.

We hope these resources offer encouragement and practical tools. If you know an older adult, caregiver, family member, or friend who could benefit from this information, please share this newsletter with them.

With heartfelt appreciation,

The Independence at Home Team

Grief, Healing and Hope

Emotional wellness includes making space for all our feelings, including grief. While many people associate grief with the loss of a loved one, it can also arise from major life changes such as retirement, declining health, loss of independence, caregiving challenges, or other transitions that come with aging.

In this video, Fabio, IAH Mental Health Specialist, shares how grief can show up in everyday life, why there is no "right" way to grieve, and gentle reminders for moving forward with self-compassion.

Whether you're experiencing loss yourself or supporting someone who is, this conversation offers encouragement, understanding, and hope.

Strength in Every Decision

Medicare decisions can be complicated.

From comparing plans to understanding coverage and enrollment periods, many older adults and caregivers are left wondering: Which plan is the right fit? Will prescriptions still be covered? What happens if healthcare needs change?

These moments can bring uncertainty, but they can also be opportunities to find support. Learn how the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) across the country and the Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP) in California provide free, trusted Medicare guidance that helps older adults, caregivers, and families make informed decisions.

Need Extra Support While Staying Independent at Home?

The Multipurpose Senior Services Program (MSSP) is a no-cost care management program that helps eligible older adults continue living safely and independently in their homes and communities.

One of the unique benefits of MSSP is that participants can keep their current doctors and healthcare providers while receiving personalized care management and support services.

MSSP can help you:

  • Access no-cost care management services
  • Remain safely at home longer
  • Maintain your independence and quality of life
  • Keep the doctors and providers you know and trust
  • Receive personalized support tailored to your needs

If you or a loved one could benefit from additional support to remain independent at home, MSSP may be the right fit.

Watch the video to learn more about care management and how MSSP can help. If you have questions, we're here to help. Contact us to learn more and see if you qualify or click below to explore MSSP.

When Caregiving and Financial Planning Meet

Watching a parent age can bring a mix of emotions, from concern and uncertainty to a growing sense of responsibility. As caregiving needs increase, planning ahead, building financial resilience, and having honest family conversations can help ease stress and create greater peace of mind.

A recent Consumer Affairs survey found that many adults are taking a closer look at their own financial plans as they prepare to support aging loved ones.

Nurturing Brain Health in Every Season

Healthy aging starts with a healthy brain. UCLA Health is seeking adults 60+ for a research study exploring whether nutrition may help support cognitive function and reduce the risk of age-related cognitive decline. By participating, you'll help advance research aimed at helping older adults stay strong and independent for years to come.
