Data Monitored on Mask Mitigation and Update Provided After Winter Break
As we approach Winter Break, we know that there are holidays and family events that are top of mind. We also know that January 3rd will be here before we know it and staff and families are wondering what our district is considering in regards to mitigation efforts.

We continue to monitor data to inform our decision making in regards to mitigating COVID: the county positivity rate, county transmission level, county 0-17 age group reported cases, and our district positivity rate. Due to the increased access to vaccinations for children ages 5-11 as well as booster access for individuals over the age of 16, we realize that is a necessary factor to consider when assessing masking mitigation.

We realize that community gatherings that happen during this time of year may impact the spread of illness, including COVID-19. The county rate is certainly on the rise over the past several weeks. As always, we will monitor the data after Winter Break, including the percentage of our students and staff members who are vaccinated, and take all data into consideration in making future recommendations. We will update our community after Winter Break.

This is the season for colds, flus, and other viruses, so please do continue to take care of yourselves:
  • Frequent hand washing and sanitizing
  • Healthy eating
  • Daily sleep—8 hours per night
  • Prevention of spread: cover mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing; wash hands after blowing nose, coughing or sneezing; carry tissues; use antibacterial wipes for personal spaces/desks
  • Physical health—get outdoors, utilize PE courses, play at recess, go for family walks, stretch muscles
  • Mental health—provide time to “decompress”—rest, relaxing activities, yoga/meditation/breathing exercises

Be safe and healthy.

CRCSD Happenings
CRCSD Launches First Employee Affinity Group

We are excited to announce the launch of our first employee affinity group. Affinity groups help foster a sense of belonging amongst marginalized communities. The Black/African American affinity group is the first in a series of intentional efforts to create safe spaces that empower our staff who traditionally have been underrepresented in our system. This group is specifically for those who identify as Black/African American. The need for these CRCSD groups has been highlighted in our district-wide survey results and disproportionate hiring and retention rates. Individuals who don’t identify as Black/African American will have other opportunities to support this work.

Meet Chris Deam: Jefferson Activities Director

Chris Deam realized he wanted to switch careers soon after he finished his accounting degree.

“I was in a cubicle doing taxes and calling down to the state wrestling tournament checking on kids,” he says. “That’s when I realized that I needed to do something else.”

Learn more about Deam and his passionate work helping Jefferson High School students reach their full potential in the video above and link below.
Join the Team as a Teacher Associate (Para) or Teacher Substitute

Beginning January 8, 2022, starting pay for teacher associates—also known as paraeducators—will be $15.50. This change includes the negotiated rate for the 2022-23 school year. The teacher associate compensation package is competitive for the Cedar Rapids metro area.

“The board has had a long time vision of finding a pathway to move this forward,” says Superintendent Noreen Bush.

The pay rate of current teacher associates will be increased to $15.50 an hour or by 3 percent, whichever is higher. Currently, 28 Cedar Rapids Community School District teacher associates earn over $20 an hour. As of Thursday, Dec. 16, there are 66 openings for CRCSD teacher associates.
