Congratulations to the Spring Online Show Award Winners!
|
American Women Artists extends congratulations to all the artists juried into the 2021 Spring Online Juried Show! More than 1,200 artworks were submitted from over 450 artists, out of which 120 incredible pieces were chosen. Of those juried into the show, fifteen were awarded prizes. Texas artist Daniela Werneck is this year's Grand Prize Winner!
"It was a beautiful surprise that could not have happened at a better moment, " wrote Daniela. "Being chosen among so many talented women makes me feel very honored and grateful for the opportunity."
Daniela was born in Brazil to a Portuguese family. The Retreat is a part of a series of paintings she created, inspired by the lives of her ancestors and the Portuguese culture. "The swallow bird carries strong symbolism in Portugal. They are the symbols of love and loyalty, as well as home and family; feelings that are well rooted in Portuguese culture. After flights looking for milder climates, the swallows build their nest in the same place year after year. They are also creatures that, throughout their lives, have a single partner," she described.
Daniela went on to say, "The universe of these migratory birds is a beautiful analogy to the Portuguese people in general; people who have always spread their wings, through the navigation, and left the nest to explore other parts of the world, but who tend to return home once a year."

We are awed by the generosity of the following companies who donated merchandise and gift certificates that were used in our award packages for the 2021 Spring Online Juried Show, particularly at a time when many businesses have closed and there is so much financial uncertainty. Please keep these businesses in mind when you purchase your art supplies and advertisements.

2021 Spring Online Show Selection Juror and Signature Member Claudia Seymour shared her criteria for jurying the show. Claudia is the President Emerita of the Salmagundi Art Club in New York City and AWA is honored to have her join our juror team.
Claudia shares, "I truly appreciate being asked to serve as a juror of selection or judge of awards for a selective show, whether online or on the walls. I think it is an important way for established artists both to give back to their community and to help to raise the standards of art in which they believe. As I judge, I usually make several passes through the entries: a first pass to get an overall view of the work submitted, a second pass to look in depth at the pieces and try to establish the beginnings of priority choices, and a last look-through to see if I want or need to change earlier impressions. I look first and foremost for fine composition and drawing, for proper anatomy and perspective, good use of value, and a sense of atmosphere--yes, even in a still life."
