Demolition in JP and PDSD Update

On Monday, April 6, Planning and Development Services met with neighbors concerning the protocol for demolishing homes. The main points are:

  1. Only homes that are designated as a Historic Landmark may have special protection from demolition.*
  2. A home in our Historic District, within our NPZ, will be under the rules of the NPZ, the Neighborhood Preservation Zone Plan.
  3. PDSD is designing a new protocol for notifying neighbors of any proposed demolition that will include notification signs posted on the property, fully legible from the street. PDSD will then be aware if neighbors have been notified.
  4. The issue of lead and asbestos is the purview of the county and state regulations. https://azdeq.gov/asbestos
  5. Until an owner submits a design, PDSD and the neighborhood will not be aware of what is planned for a specific lot. When the design has been approved, PDSD is accountable to ensure that the permit is consistent with the approved design https://www.tucsonaz.gov/Departments/Planning-Development-Services/Permits
  6.  When a permit application is submitted, the neighborhood may be notified by mail via their designated PO Box.

*A Historic Landmark home must be requested and processed by the

owners of the home. If it qualifies as an historic landmark, it will be

designated as such. For guidelines, see: https://www.tucsonaz.gov/files/sharedassets/public/v/1/city-services/planning-development-services/historic-preservation/documents/hl_application_2018_rev7-20.pdf

Additionally, Koren Manning, PDSD Director, announced that they would shortly have a decision about the legality of commercial signs on rental properties.

IST Playground/City Park Closed - Update

According to Ward III, Parks and Rec must wait for the new fiscal budget in July to make decisions about returning the playground to the status of a city park. The issues are adequate funding, liability, and maintenance.
