The Safe Haven for Newborns program is the safety net for girls and women facing an unplanned pregnancy — sometimes their only recourse. Since we began our mission to end infant abandonment over 20 years ago, the one constant we see and hear from the girls/women in distress is that they are afraid, they feel abandoned and they don’t know what is going to happen to them or their baby. A plight that crosses all categories of age, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status.

When they reach out and contact A Safe Haven for Newborns, some are towards the end of their pregnancy and the birth is fast approaching. And, because they have been hiding their pregnancy, have had no prenatal care. While others have been thrown out of their family home and have nowhere to go. The stories are as varied as the girls/women in crisis. Those that should protect them have abandoned them.

After receiving the distressed call at the 24/7 confidential help line, Safe Haven Newborns contacts the appropriate agencies, on their behalf. No judgement, no questions asked, and confidential.

Relying on the vast network of agencies Safe Haven for Newborns has partnered with across the state of Florida they go to work to connect the distressed expectant girl/woman with the services they need in their area. Referral to services such as shelter, maternity homes, counseling, health-related issues, providing newborn necessities, help for abuse, suicide prevention, connecting them with Medicaid, or information on adoption. All the services they are referred to and receive are at no cost to them. The services are paid from the monies collected at the fundraising events we have throughout the year; and by the monthly donations of our generous supporters.

Recently, a call came in from a young woman who was weeks away from giving birth and had been hiding her pregnancy. When her family found out, she was asked to leave. In tears, she contacted Safe Haven for Newborns and we made arrangements for her to have a safe place to stay, be seen by a doctor to ensure a safe delivery and a healthy baby. And was referred for counseling and presented with options so she could make an informed decision about what would be best for her and her unborn child. This is just one of over 5,000 similar calls Safe Haven for Newborns receives annually.

We need your help and your support. Will you help and join us on our mission to end the ultimate in infant abuse — abandonment?
