A Note From Executive Director, Sandi Winter

Looking Back, Moving Forward

Can you believe we are already halfway through 2026? June feels like the perfect moment to pause, take a breath, and reflect on what we have accomplished together — and to share a peek at what is ahead.

Here are some highlights from the first half of the year:

  • January — Senior Coastsiders unveiled its new logo and visual identity — a refreshed look featuring a heart supported by hands, a seedling, a seagull, and a whale tail, with a color palette rooted in Coastside waters, hills, and pumpkin traditions. Along with the new look came the formal adoption of our tagline, "Supporting Successful Aging."
  • February — We launched two exciting new dance classes in partnership with Pack Dance Studio — Silver Steppers Tap Class and Silver Swans Ballet. The off-site location in Princeton Harbor aligns with our 2025–2027 Strategic Plan to deliver programs and services in locations north of Half Moon Bay.
  • March — Our Flower Piano Concert brought the community together for an elegant evening of music, food, drinks, and a wonderful raffle, with prize donations from more than 30 local businesses and individuals.
  • April — We celebrated over 220 volunteers who contributed around 15,000 hours of service. Our volunteers are truly the backbone of our organization, making the scale of our programs and services possible.
  • May — Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we met our goal of raising over $125,000 during Coastside Gives. We also celebrated Older Americans Month with our biggest Senior Resource Fair yet, welcoming more than 20 local vendors, distinguished guest speakers, and hundreds of neighbors. This year's theme: Champion Your Health.

And some special events to put on your calendar for the months ahead:

  • June 6 — During our 35th Annual Minor Home Repair Day, teams of volunteers will help dozens of older Coastsiders improve the safety and accessibility of their homes.
  • July 10 — Our free Annual Summer BBQ brings together members of our community for delicious food, great company, and dancing to the very popular Back Pages — a band that pays tribute to 60s rock and roll, authentically recreating the sound, image, and spirit of the era.
  • October 18 — Registration is now open for our 48th Annual Pumpkin Run! There is plenty of time to start training for a run or walk distance that works for you.

During the next six months we will continue to lay the groundwork for our 50th anniversary celebrations in 2027. If you have photos, stories, or memories about your connection with Senior Coastsiders over time — particularly from decades past — we would love to hear from you. Please reach out at swinter@seniorcoastsiders.org or 650-726-9056.

Thank You to Our Donors!

Thank you for giving during Coastside Gives!

A huge thank you to the 331 very generous individuals who included Senior Coastsiders in their giving on Coastside Gives Day - including 27 new donors! Thanks to this amazing community support, we exceeded our goal and raised $130,201. Behind every dollar is a neighbor who will receive a hot meal, a ride to an appointment, a home repair that keeps them safe, or a care manager who picks up the phone when they need help. We are so grateful for this support! Thank you also to the generous facilitators and sponsors of the 2026 Coastside Gives Day of Giving.

Happening at Senior Coastsiders

New Writing Workshop Coming in June!

Not "Just" Journaling : Wednesdays,

June 10-July 15, 10am-12pm

Writing instructor David Jacobson returns to Senior Coastsiders to facilitate a series of classes titled

Not "Just" Journaling. Critics who say a writer is "just journaling" do a disservice by giving the writer a bad rap. In reality, journaling is an important practice! Participants in this series of sessions will learn to enliven their journals with artistic elements, such as metaphor, wordplay, and connecting daily life events to broader cultural themes.

New Tech Offering Coming Soon!

Senior Coastsiders just received a grant of $4,000 from the Rotary Club of Half Moon Bay to launch “Pay with Confidence,” a ten-month digital literacy program that helps Coastside older adults safely set up and use digital wallets such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, and Venmo on their own devices.

Digital literacy is essential for accessing modern financial tools, healthcare systems, government services, and staying connected with family and community. Yet many older adults face barriers to using these technologies confidently and safely, particularly as financial scams targeting seniors continue to rise.

Through small-group, hands-on sessions led by Digital Navigator Wanda Bowles, participants will receive personalized guidance in setting up and securely using digital payment tools in a supportive peer environment. Each session will serve up to four participants, with approximately 40 older adults reached over the course of the project.

Designed to complement Senior Coastsiders’ existing partnership with Senior Planet, Pay with Confidence moves beyond basic device skills into practical,

real-world financial literacy - helping older adults build confidence, independence, and safety in today’s digital world. Stay tuned for details!

Did you know that age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of vision loss, affecting an estimated 20 million people in the United States alone? This condition impacts the macula—the part of the eye responsible for sharp, central vision—making everyday activities like reading, driving, and recognizing faces more difficult. Common symptoms include blurred or distorted vision, dark or empty areas in the center of sight, and difficulty seeing in low light. While AMD does not cause complete blindness, early detection and support can make a meaningful difference.

In October 1998, Matthew Shepard, a 21-year-old gay college student, was brutally attacked and left to die outside Laramie, Wyoming. His death sparked a national conversation about hate, justice and the power of community. Created from hundreds of interviews with the people of Laramie, The Laramie Project is a groundbreaking work of contemporary theatre that confronts prejudice and reveals both the depths of intolerance and the resilience of compassion. This powerful play challenges audiences to reflect on the world we live in and the change we can create together. Recommended for ages 14+

This production contains mature themes, including depictions and discussions of homophobia, hate crimes, violence, and the murder of Matthew Shepard. The play includes strong language and emotionally intense material that may be distressing to some audience members. Buy tickets here.
