GUATEMALA 2022 INAUGURATION
B3 Board of Directors (Howard Greene and Colleen Claflin) joined Executive Director, Amy Schroeder-Riggio and traveled to Guatemala in July to celebrate and inaugurate the 2022 projects. A plaque was presented at each of the sites as a way to commemorate our collaboration and our time in these amazing communities.

The first stop on the inauguration tour was Balanya English Academy (also known as BEA). This was B3’s second time working with BEA. In 2019, B3 worked to build the first 6 classrooms of the school. In 2022, the Odyssey, Equipo Esperanza and Rock-It! teams were able to stay in the classrooms built by the 2019 B3 teams! This year, B3 teams built a playground/sport court, and a very large cafeteria/kitchen. The playground/sport court is already in use and awaiting the “juegos” (playground equipment). The cafeteria/kitchen, also known as the “comedor” has made tremendous progress – it is huge! – and estimated to be completed in August.

Day 2 was a BUSY day that began in San Mateo Milpas Altas with a visit to the school, Semillas de Esperanza y Amor, where the Amanecer/Mejuntos team built a classroom – known as “Salon B3”. Salon B-3 is now home to the 5th grade class. The Amanecer/Mejuntos team worked SO hard that it was completed in time for the Estrellon team to stay there in April when they came to work on their own project.

The Estrellon team worked with a local organization (and longtime B3 partner) ConstruCasa to build a home for the Chu Bocon family (all 8 of the children have been part of the Semillas de Esperanza y Amor school). The family LOVES their new home! A favorite part of the house is the window facing the beautiful view of Volcan Agua.

The final stop in Guatemala was to Transitions to celebrate the new basketball and sport court. Transitions operates multiple programs dedicated to improving the lives of people with disabilities. Programs include: wheelchair manufacturing, a prosthetic & orthotic clinic, a print shop, a Special Education classroom, educational scholarships, and a wheelchair basketball program. 75% of the people that work at Transitions are persons with disabilities who all started as participants in Transitions’ programs.
This was a particularly special B3 project, as every single student and advisor had a hand in this project! Each team worked at Transitions, collaborating with ConstruCasa and other organizations to complete a beautiful wheelchair-accessible sport court.
