Sheriffs Make Waves With Boater Safety
It’s That Time of Year Again . . . New York State Sheriffs’ Association President and Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple (pictured) kicks off a press event near the Hudson River in Albany to mark the start of boating season across New York State and in observance of National Safe Boating Week, held May 20 – 26 this year. Sheriff Apple noted from U.S. Coast Guard statistics that drowning was the reported cause of death in four out of every five recreational boating fatalities in 2021, with 83% of those who drowned not wearing life jackets. He also reported that all operators of motorized vessels, regardless of age, will be required to have a boating safety certificate by January 2025.

REMINDER: Yellow Dot Campaign Underway
The New York State Sheriffs’ Association reminds Sheriffs statewide about the recent campaign to highlight the Association’s Yellow Dot service.
Yellow Dot is a free program designed to help first responders provide life-saving medical attention during an emergency.
A Yellow Dot in the driver’s-side rear window of a vehicle or on the door at a private residence will alert first responders that vital medical information is stored in the car’s glove compartment or the home freezer. The Sheriffs’ Association has distributed over two million free Yellow Dots to New Yorkers.

Chautauqua County Jail Health Services Receives Accreditation

The Chautauqua County Jail has received accreditation from the National Commission on Correctional Health Care.
Chautauqua County Sheriff Jim Quattrone (pictured) announced the accreditation at a meeting of the County Legislature in May, noting Chautauqua County is one of five counties in New York State to have the designation.
Sheriff Quattrone said that due to the County being accepted into a nationwide study by Harvard University, the costs of applying for the accreditation were covered by Harvard.
“We have a constitutional obligation to provide health care to those incarcerated in our jail, and we are committed to doing so with innovation, excellence and efficiency,” noted Sheriff Quattrone. “I salute the health-care staff, custody staff and leadership for their hard work and dedication on behalf of our patients.”
