Keeping an eye out for powdery mildew!

With summer now underway, you may encounter powdery mildew, a common fungal diseases that can significantly impact plant health.

Powdery Mildew manifests as white, powdery spots on leaves, stems, and buds. It's most prevalent in warm climates, thriving on a variety of plants, including roses, vegetables, and ornamental shrubs. Powdery mildew can weaken plants, stunt growth and diminish blooms. To manage it, Van Slyke Landscape ensures proper air circulation by spacing plants adequately and pruning regularly. We water plants at their base, rather than from above, which also helps to reduce humidity around foliage.

Van Slyke Landscape addresses powdery mildew early to save your plants from severe damage and help keep your landscape looking its best!

Monthly Maintenance Tasks

During the month of May and into the month of June, Van Slyke Landscape has started treating for the warm season, including combating very invasive weeds Kyllinga and nutsedge.

In May and in June, we will get mulch down to keep the moisture in and help reduce weeds for the upcoming summer.

Also, this time of the year we focus on aerating and fertilizing Bermuda and other types of "warm season" grasses as they start to come out of dormancy.

Lastly, we put out our second round of grub control and keep an eye out for other pests and diseases such as powdery mildew and rust (rampant in our May Gray and June Gloom months).

Rust seen on plants: What VSL is doing

Rust, which is characterized by orange, yellow, or brown pustules on leaf undersides, often appears on roses, hollyhocks, and various fruit trees. This disease flourishes in humid conditions and can lead to leaf drop, weakening plants over time. Van Slyke Landscape combats rust by removing affected leaves and improving air circulation. We avoid overhead watering and apply fungicides labeled for rust treatment.

Consistent monitoring and proactive management are key to maintaining a healthy, vibrant landscape.
