AGRICULTURAL NEWS

Edwards County Ag Day 2025

The second annual Kids Ag Day took place in April. During this event, fourth and fifth graders from Edwards County schools had the opportunity to learn about various aspects of agriculture by engaging with experts in the field. The students even had the chance to sit inside a tractor cab! Before returning to school, they were served a locally sourced grilled hamburger and ice cream for dessert. Ag Day wouldn’t have been possible without the support of local businesses and community members.

Chickens & Eggs in Lewis School

Ag Agent Baley visited Lewis Elementary School over three weeks to teach students about the life cycle of chickens, emphasizing their nutrition.

Chicken eggs are rich in proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals essential for growth and health. Proper nutrition at every life stage is crucial for egg quality.

Recently, students enjoyed boiled eggs as a healthy snack, showcasing the benefits of eggs for both chickens and humans. Eggs are nutrient-dense and beneficial for everyone!

Marlyn and Kathie Spare of Stafford County attended the Kansas Master Farmer and Master Farm Homemakers banquet in March along with their family, Ag Agent Baley, and other fellow Stafford County members of the previous year’s classes. Marlyn and Kathie were one of the six couples chosen for the class of 2024. We are so proud to have them, among others, in Stafford County, making us one of the leading counties in Kansas in membership to The Kansas Master Farmer Association.

A collaborative tractor safety operator’s course among various western Kansas extension offices is set for June 3rd in Cimmaron, KS. This safety day has many interactive and hands-on learning opportunities for youth. Youth will receive a certificate upon completion if they are, or when they turn 14 years of age. Baley will be providing transportation, and highly encourages youth to attend. Please call the St. John office if you have any questions.
