WE CELEBRATE HELEN MITSUI'S

100TH BIRTHDAY

Our beloved Helen Mitsui turned 100 years old on Saturday, May 17!

We are so grateful for Helen's life work and the legacy of the Helen Mitsui Shared Blessings Thrift Shop. Her dedication and leadership have been a blessing to Christ Memorial and the island of Kauaʻi.

Helen managed the thrift shop for 30 years and was honored in 2013 for her dedication with the renaming of the shop to bear her name: The Helen Mitsui Shared Blessings Thrift Shop.

We offer our prayers and congratulations to you, Helen, in your 100th year! What an honor to know and love you.

EASTER REFLECTION

Recently, a friend told me a story about twins talking to each other in the womb. The sister said to the brother, “I believe there is life after birth.” Her brother protested vehemently, “No, no, this is all there is. This is a dark and cozy place, and we have nothing else to do but to cling to the cord that feeds us.” The little girl insisted, “There must be something more than this dark place. There must be something else, a place with light where there is freedom to move.”

Still she could not convince her twin brother. After some silence, the sister said hesitantly, “I have something else to say, and I’m afraid you won’t believe that, either, but I think there is a mother.” Her brother became furious. “A mother!” he shouted. “What are you talking about? I have never seen a mother, and neither have you. Who put that idea in your head? As I told you, this place is all we have. Why do you always want more? This is not such a bad place, after all. We have all we need, so let’s be content.”

The sister was quite overwhelmed by her brother’s response and for a while didn’t dare say anything more. But she couldn’t let go of her thoughts, and since she had only her twin brother to speak to, she finally said, “Don’t you feel these squeezes every once in a while? They’re quite unpleasant and sometimes even painful.” “Yes,” he answered. “What’s special about that?” “Well,” the sister said, “I think that these squeezes are there to get us ready for another place, much more beautiful than this, where we will see our mother face-to-face. Don’t you think that’s exciting?” The brother didn’t answer. He was fed up with the foolish talk of his sister and felt that the best thing would be simply to ignore her and hope that she would leave him alone.

This story may help us to think about death in a new way. We can live as if this life were all we had, as if death were absurd and we had better not talk about it; or we can choose to claim our divine childhood and trust that death is the painful but blessed passage that will bring us face-to-face with our God.

POPE LEO XIV

In the Roman Catholic Church, the College of Cardinals elected Robert Francis Prevost, 69, the 267th pope on May 8. He is the first United States citizen to become the Bishop of Rome.

We offer prayers for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21, for the new ministry and papacy of Pope Leo XIV, for our siblings in the Roman Catholic Church, and for the communion, ministry and unity of the church around the world.

PRESIDING BISHOP SEAN ROWE

ON EPISCOPAL MIGRATION MINISTRIES

On May 12, Presiding Bishop Rowe released a letter announcing the Episcopal Churchʻs decision to conclude the refugee resettlement grant agreements with the U.S. federal government. This was based on selective refugee resettlement choices not in alignment with the Episcopal commitment to racial justice and reconciliation.

"As Christians, we must be guided not by political vagaries, but by the sure and certain knowledge that the kingdom of God is revealed to us in the struggles of those on the margins. Jesus tells us to care for the poor and vulnerable as we would care for him, and we must follow that command. Right now, what that means is ending our participation in the federal government’s refugee resettlement program and investing our resources in serving migrants in other ways."

In his letter, he describes a churchwide plan to support migrants and refugees through diocesan partnerships, global connections, and fundraising. Read the full text of his letter here.

Christ the Teacher by Robert Thurman

BOOK STUDY WITH REV. SUZANNE

"The Tears of Things" book study, Thursdays at 4:00 pm Hawaii time on Zoom

"In his first major work since The Universal Christ, Richard Rohr offers a wholehearted and hope-filled model for the world today, grounded in the timeless wisdom of the Hebrew prophets. How do we live compassionately in a time of violence and despair? What can we do with our private disappointments and the anger we feel in such an unjust world? In his most personal book yet, Richard Rohr turns to the writings of the Jewish prophets, revealing how some of the lesser-read books of the Bible offer us a crucial path forward today."

All are welcome. Fr. Richard's theology shines through the pages of this book. Mother Suzanne Kobayashi will facilitate the discussion.
