Happy Monday Everyone!

This week’s edition of Chicken Chat covers two weeks’ worth of information as Dixie and I will be away from tomorrow afternoon (October 20th) until the afternoon of November 5th. Father John “Hauoli” Tomoso will cover services while Dixie and I are away. We will be flying down to Papeete, Tahiti tomorrow afternoon and then sail back from Tahiti to Honolulu. It will be the first time for Dixie to travel south of the Equator.

In previous editions of Chicken Chat I mentioned that I will undergo surgery to address my sleep apnea. That surgery will take place on Wednesday, November 11th and I ask for your prayers. I also ask for your understanding. The recovery time for the surgery is two weeks. The first Saturday (November 14th) after the surgery, Mother Heather Mueller will take care of the Saturday 5 PM service. Peter Lee and Mother Linda Decker will take care of the Sunday 9 AM service (November 15th). The following weekend I think I will be well enough to take care of the Saturday 5 PM service (November 21st) and on Sunday at 9 AM (November 22nd) Bishop Emelyn Dacuycuy will be with us to preach and preside at the Feast of Padi Gregorio Aglipay. I will be at that service, but won’t have to do much. Then on Tuesday, November 24 I go back to Honolulu to have the stitches and stents taken out of my nose. I feel the need to do this surgery now, rather than waiting several years down the road when it may become more critical and when I am older. Again, thank you for understanding.

In addition to our services at church, the weekend was busy. Many of us gathered in Honolulu on Saturday for The Annual Meeting of the Diocesan Convention. I came back on Saturday afternoon and then after church on Sunday, Dixie and I went back to Honolulu to attend an Evensong at St. Andrew’s Cathedral where Bishop Fitzpatrick named nine Honorary Canons, including me. There were five others from the Diocese of Hawai’i—Roth Puahala from St. Andrew’s Cathedral, Rae Costa from the Diocesan Support Center, Stuart Ching who is the Diocesan Historiographer, Ryan Kusumoto who is the Diocesan Treasurer, and Father Randy Albano who is the former Vicar of St. Paul’s Church in Honolulu, a congregation largely made up of people from Ilocos Norte in the Philippines. I have worked closely with all five of these Honorary Canons in different capacities over the years. It is an honor to be included among them for recognition.

The three other Honorary Canons are from provinces in the Pacific Region including Jenny Te Paa who is a public theologian from Aotearoa, Mr. Fe'iloakitau Kaho Tevi who is the Co-Vicar General of the Anglican Diocese of Polynesia, and Mr. Floyd Lalwet who is the Senior Consultant and Provincial Secretary of the Episcopal Church in the Philippines. Floyd and I have worked very closely over the years to develop and strengthen the relationship between The Episcopal Church in the Philippines and the Diocese of Hawai’i, and I consider him a friend.

It was a wonderful evening and an honor to be included in amongst such an esteemed group of people. It was also touching to have family members and close friends also attend the service.

Please take care. I know that you will do everything you can to embrace Father Tomoso while he is with you over the next two weekends. I look forward to seeing you all after Dixie and I get back from our trip.

Blessings,

Father Moki

Readings for The 22nd Sunday After Pentecost, Proper 25

Sunday, October 25th

Leviticus 19:1-2,15-18

The Lord spoke to Moses, saying: Speak to all the congregation of the people of Israel and say to them: You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy. You shall not render an unjust judgment; you shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great: with justice you shall judge your neighbor. You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people, and you shall not profit by the blood of your neighbor: I am the Lord. You shall not hate in your heart anyone of your kin; you shall reprove your neighbor, or you will incur guilt yourself. You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against any of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.

Psalm 1

1 Happy are they who have not walked in the counsel of the wicked, *

nor lingered in the way of sinners,

nor sat in the seats of the scornful!

2 Their delight is in the law of the Lord, *

and they meditate on his law day and night.

3 They are like trees planted by streams of water,

bearing fruit in due season, with leaves that do not wither; *

everything they do shall prosper.

4 It is not so with the wicked; *

they are like chaff which the wind blows away.

5 Therefore the wicked shall not stand upright when judgment comes, *

nor the sinner in the council of the righteous.

6 For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, *

but the way of the wicked is doomed.

Thessalonians 2:1-8

You yourselves know, brothers and sisters, that our coming to you was not in vain, but though we had already suffered and been shamefully mistreated at Philippi, as you know, we had courage in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in spite of great opposition. For our appeal does not spring from deceit or impure motives or trickery, but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the message of the gospel, even so we speak, not to please mortals, but to please God who tests our hearts. As you know and as God is our witness, we never came with words of flattery or with a pretext for greed; nor did we seek praise from mortals, whether from you or from others, though we might have made demands as apostles of Christ. But we were gentle among you, like a nurse tenderly caring for her own children. So deeply do we care for you that we are determined to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you have become very dear to us.

Matthew 22:34-46

When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” He said to him, “’You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.” Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them this question: “What do you think of the Messiah? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “The son of David.” He said to them, “How is it then that David by the Spirit calls him Lord, saying, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet”’? If David thus calls him Lord, how can he be his son?” No one was able to give him an answer, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.

Readings for The Feast of All Saints

Sunday, November 1st

Revelation 7:9-17

After this I, John, looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice, saying, "Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!" And all the angels stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, singing, "Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen." Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, "Who are these, robed in white, and where have they come from?" I said to him, "Sir, you are the one that knows." Then he said to me, "These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. "For this reason they are before the throne of God, and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. They will hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat; for the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes."

Psalm 34:1-10, 22

1 I will bless the Lord at all times; *

his praise shall ever be in my mouth.

2 I will glory in the Lord; *

let the humble hear and rejoice.

3 Proclaim with me the greatness of the Lord; *

let us exalt his Name together.

4 I sought the Lord, and he answered me *

and delivered me out of all my terror.

5 Look upon him and be radiant, *

and let not your faces be ashamed.

6 I called in my affliction and the Lord heard me *

and saved me from all my troubles.

7 The angel of the Lord encompasses those who fear him, *

and he will deliver them.

8 Taste and see that the Lord is good; *

happy are they who trust in him!

9 Fear the Lord, you that are his saints, *

for those who fear him lack nothing.

10 The young lions lack and suffer hunger, *

but those who seek the Lord lack nothing that is good.

22 The Lord ransoms the life of his servants, *

and none will be punished who trust in him.

1 John 3:1-3

In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God's own people, to the praise of his glory.

Matthew 5:1-12

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. "Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. "Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. "Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you."
