Downtown St. Joseph, St. Joseph, MO
One building at a time, Main Street programs are saving their downtowns by investing in protecting and maintaining their historic buildings. Missouri Main Street Connection equips Main Street programs to facilitate façade grant programs to maintain the health and attractiveness of the façade of a historic building to attract renters and patrons as well as other preservation and maintenance-focused initiatives that engage property owners and protect historic properties.

During 2022, Main Street organizations saved a total of 303 historic buildings (as of January 2023) through various preservation initiatives and campaigns supported in part by generous donors as well as through educational resources provided by MMSC.

Saving the historic buildings on Main Street provides local entrepreneurs and business owners a place to have a physical storefront presence or add a new amenity downtown by utilizing an underutilized but historically contributing property. The impact of preservation efforts on Main Streets on the local economy cannot be understated.

Additionally, supporting the preservation work of saving historic homes near the Main Street district enhances the historic atmosphere that makes local Main Street districts so economically impactful throughout the state.

Missouri Main Street Connection staff works with communities on developing facade grant programs; identifying funding sources for preservation initiatives; and professional connections for companies that work with historic buildings to equip Main Street programs to save their downtown historic architecture which can be used as an economic development tool via architectural scavenger hunts.
