More Visual Fitness for Positivity & Wellness

“The only real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.” --Marcel Proust

Still focused on positivity and wellness as discussed in my last newsletter, my art and teaching continue to explore the power of virtues such as resilience, discernment, and creativity. I'm happy to report I’ve had some fun creating products with Practice the Re’S! to be made into inspirational, multi-use bandanas at Rancho La Puerta.

Question: If AI can answer before we have truly looked, what happens to the human capacity to see?

After a quiet stretch away from newsletters, I am returning with renewed energy around positivity, wellness, art, and lifelong learning. In our digital device-driven world, Visual Fitness--the ability to decode and encode visual meaning--is a human practice for sustaining attention, informing judgment, and meaning-making. While the increased availability of Artificial Intelligence (AI) threatens to think for us, our eyes need to be open to what we do not wish to see. Using Form + Theme + Context (FTC), Visual Fitness helps us see the BIG PICTURE for clarity, understanding, and human connection. I call this Authentic Intelligence: the practice of trusting our own perceptions to observe, interpret, and reflect, while using tools thoughtfully. As we decode meaning, the balanced practice of Visual Fitness can help us gain confidence in our perceptiveness and creativity.

A museum educator recently described a telling moment: when she asked visitors to consider color in a Bonnard painting, one person took out his phone and immediately asked AI for the answer. Posing the question was useful, but the looking had stopped before it began. The challenge for educators is not to reject AI, but to slow the moment down so critical thinking and close looking can begin before the tool supplies a response.

This question—how we keep looking, thinking, and making meaning for ourselves—continues to shape my teaching, art making, exhibitions, blog post, podcast, and my forthcoming book chapter on Visual Fitness for All.   Along with teaching, recent workshops and courses in creativity and aging, memoir writing, and American mahjong are keeping me in the role of learner, opening fresh pathways for reflection, creativity, and teaching in the months ahead.

In short, SEEING MORE is both a mindset and a practice—an invitation to meet the speed of AI with human attention, curiosity, and sensitivity. The more we practice looking closely, the more fully we can learn, create, and connect.

Come practice with me. Choose one of the upcoming workshops below and join a community of curious learners who are slowing down, looking closely, and strengthening their own Authentic Intelligence together.

Artist/Educator Spotlight

Brian Reverman

Brian Reverman

Long overdue, I’m excited to showcase artist and educator Brian Reverman, whose professional work focuses on “making sense of art.” Brian created the ISB Art History Channel, a YouTube library with more than 65 instructional videos that support learners in analyzing and interpreting art.

I am grateful for Brian’s ongoing contributions to Visual Fitness practices, especially his tools for applying Form + Theme + Context (FTC) to art analysis and artistic language development. He has designed curriculum featuring FTC for the American School of Mumbai, the International School of Beijing, and HKUGA College in Hong Kong. His updated Art-o-matic and Art-o-matic Mini build on the Art-o-matic online annotation tool he developed about 10 years ago; with AI-supported feedback, the app is now easier to use and helps students strengthen their analysis in real time.

On Brian’s website, you’ll find videos, middle and high school lessons, downloadable PDFs, and additional resources. Here's a sample of Brian's updated animated videos that teach all learners how to find meaning in art using FTC:

·       Discovering Art: The Search for Meaning

·       Discovering More About Art: The Search for Meaning Continues

·       Kracking the Kode: Where’s the Meaning in Art?

Brian is currently a visiting artist providing multi-day residencies, single-day workshops, and professional development for schools worldwide. You can contact him here.

Thank you Brian Reverman for your invaluable instructional resources and for advancing creative and critical thinking in contemporary art education. Your work helps activate visual literacy into Visual Fitness for everyone!
