TCA 79th Annual Christmas Luncheon Recap
|
|
The annual TCA Christmas Luncheon was held on December 1, 2023, at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre and once again proved to be a popular destination for the construction industry. As it does every year, it closed out the Building Show, and this year's attendance reached a new high with 2650 attendees. The MTCC was maxed-out, and the hundreds more on the waitlist were unable to attend this festive event.
Emcee and comedian Derek Edwards returned for a second time and delivered an outstanding performance that was well-received by the audience. One notable absence at this year's Christmas Lunch was Hazel McCallion, who passed away earlier in 2023. However, a touching video tribute was played in her memory, which was watched by the over 2,600 attendees, including some of Hazel's family and friends.
As always, sponsorship played a significant role in the success of the event. Many companies stepped up to make the occasion a triumph. United Rentals was the presenting sponsor and had a 60-second video played for all attendees. Other sponsors included Home Depot as the giveaway sponsor, Geosolv Design + Build as the ticket sponsor, Rochon as the Luncheon Sponsor, G&L Group as the Centrepiece Sponsor, Northfleet Group as the Wine Sponsor, and Trisura Guarantee Insurance as the Wine Sponsor.
The cocktail sponsors were Beedie Development Group, Northbridge Insurance, and Prodigy Group Construction.
A special thank you goes out to everyone who attended and helped make this year-end celebration a memorable one.

TCA 2023 Innovative Product Award (IPA) Winners
|
|
The Toronto Construction Association (TCA) 2023 Innovative Product Award (IPA) winners were announced at The 2023 Buildings Show on Friday, December 1, 2023.
The IPA Award (formerly known as TIPTA) was established in 1994 by TCA and is open to any supplier demonstrating the development and/or the use of innovative technologies in their respective industries.
Congratulations to this year's top four winners:
First place winner: Hybrid Power Solutions
Product: Batt Pack Pro
|
|
The Hybrid Power Solutions Batt Pack Pro is the first pro-grade portable power solution specifically targeting industrial and commercial applications. Hybrid Power Solutions is based in Etobicoke, ON and the Batt Pack Pro is proudly engineered and built in Canada.
The importance of the innovation is that the product offers a unique solution many professionals face and is positioned as a viable solution to changing markets that are banning petroleum based generators.
The Batt Pack Pro excels in spaces where high performance energy is required to operate industrial equipment in confined spaces, offgrid job sites, where noise restrictions are in place or mobility is required.
Our customers typically face one of four main challenges. Our Batt Pack Pro serves to address these directly, providing a cleaner, safer alternative to fuel generators.
Confined Spaces: Many of our clients work in confined spaces such as transit tunnels or mines and require access to power. Due to the confined, enclosed space, they need something that does not emit any fumes or noise, so fuel-based power sources are not an ideal option.
Off Grid: From mining to military, our clients often require access to power in remote locations. Our Batt Pack Pro can be recharged off of solar, meaning they can essentially run indefinitely. This ensures clean, reliable energy in even the most remote, off-grid situations, negating the need for complex and costly fuel logistics.
Mobility: Another common issue we encounter is the need for drop in power solutions, whether that’s for a temporary event or concert, or for emergency response. The Batt Pack Pro is portable, meaning it can be easily deployed for short term power requirements. It is also weatherproof and rated to -30*C, so it works well for outdoor applications.
Redundancy: Power outages are a massive concern for everyone from your average home owner to hospitals and data centers. Our units provide a plug and play backup power option that can be used both indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions.

Second Place Winner: Tremco Construction Products Group1
Product: Willseal PF100
PF100 is an engineered joint sealing solution composed of an impregnated top and bottom foam layer laminated together whereby the three components meet IBC air leakage requirements (ASTM E283) and meet moisture infiltration requirements per ASTM E331 (de facto NA standard) without invasive anchoring or wet adhesives for sidewall adhesion.
This breakthrough technology enables rapid installation by various labor skill levels and is not beholden to correct wet depth thickness. While PF100 as a standard is supplied without a sealant facer (which is not required to meet the testing standards) customers can select to include an optional factory-applied sealant facer, which can be color-matched to suit customer requests (PF100 with a sealant face is referred to as PF200).
This technology also allows for cladding or building envelope components to be sealed, during the installation or from the inside of the building without having to access the exterior after completion thereby saving time and resources associated with labour and access for transitional methodologies.
Considering the enormous growth modular/panelized construction is experiencing and skilled labor in increasingly short supply, PF100 answers the industry’s call for quality, consistency, and rapid installation.
The industry in North America had long resigned itself to complicated wet application sealants and/or invasive anchoring because the readily available European (loose equivalents) could meet ASTM E283/E331. The critical element in why traditional European options were not suitable in the North American market was European codes/permeability requirements/etc. typically have higher breathability requirements, whereas North American standards do not allow for/endorse the same level of breathability- and when European options were repeatedly tested over the years to North American requirements they would fail. By combining the European mastery of precompressed foam technology with the capabilities of an integral sealant barrier under constant expansive pressure, the path to success lay in finding the balance between how much foam with a flexible integral sealant barrier would pass North American testing *while* being reasonable for installers to use. PF100 went through numerous iterations (in depth, compression amount, integral sealant barrier thickness, etc.), but with the support of the Tremco Testing Wall in Beechwood, OH and later through third parties the right mix was found, proven, and launched. The groundbreaking and novel developments core to this innovation have already secured a Letter of Allowance from the USPTO (Application Number: 17/682,415).

Second Place Winner: Philadelphia Commercial/Shaw Industries Inc.
Product: ReWorx Planks
ReWorx is a new, and patented, soft fibre plank that provides all of the design, acoustics, and slip resistance of a carpet tile, but with the durability of a hard surface. This unique product type can provide solutions in environments that need durability while providing benefits not normally associates with a hard surface floor covering. We have created this product using 100% recycled material and it is cradle-to-cradle certified. Further, we have a reclamation program for the end of the products life, whereby we will pick the material up at no charge to the end user and recycle it back into new ReWorx planks.
Our challenge was how to elevate the ability of a soft surface floor covering to have the durability of a hard surface, and in doing so have a fully sustainable product, designed to be installed indoors. Such a product eliminates many concerns that design community has with certain hard surfaces (such as vinyl) and provides the sustainability, acoustic, design, and durability that is being sought in many of their projects.
We discovered how to recycle bottles and “press” the PET fibre in a new way that allows for extreme durability. The final construction allows for a product which cannot be altered in appearance by simple foot traffic, while also featuring the sought after benefits of a soft surface. The product is modular and easy to install by a typical flooring contractor. Our goal was always to create something both unique and fully sustainable.

Third Place Winner: EXTERPARK DECKING REINVENTED
Product: Magnet S
The Magnet S System, an innovative product commercialized by Exterpark, marks a significant leap forward in the decking industry.
Nature of the Innovation:
The Magnet S System is not merely an improvement; it represents a paradigm shift in the way decking is conceived and executed. The system's cornerstone lies in its ability to seamlessly integrate advanced technologies and materials into a cohesive solution that addresses challenges in the industry.
The invisible profile feature has been further refined in the Magnet S System. With a 4mm spacing for optimal drainage and ventilation, this patented profile ensures hygiene, aesthetics, and safety. No longer are decks plagued by the issues of debris accumulation, visible under structures, or safety hazards caused by gaps. The Magnet S System eradicates these concerns, offering a solution that transcends the limitations of traditional decking methods.
Screwless installation is another pivotal aspect of the innovation. The industry has long grappled with the drawbacks of screws, predrilling, and the noise associated with installation. The Magnet S System eliminates these issues, providing a smart fixing method that not only enhances installation speed (is 3x faster than standard decking installation and disassembly) but also guarantees a maintenance-friendly approach. The flexibility of the mechanical locking mechanism ensures a secure hold without sacrificing the ease of reversibility and accessibility.
Importance to the Company:
For Exterpark, the development of the Magnet S System signifies a commitment to innovation and a drive to stay at the forefront of the decking industry. Building upon the success of previous patented technologies demonstrating a strong capacity for forward-thinking solutions that address real challenges.
The invisible profile, screwless installation, and the use of aluminium joists with a 25-year warranty showcase the company's commitment to pushing the boundaries of what is possible in decking solutions.
In addition, the Magnet S System provides Exterpark with a unique selling proposition in a competitive market. It positions the company as an industry leader, setting new benchmarks for efficiency, safety, and versatility. The system's appeal to contractors, subcontractors, architects, and end-users ensures a broad market reach, further solidifying Exterpark's position as a trailblazer in the decking sector.

Brampton tower project aims to provide net-zero
affordable housing at scale
A new residential building in Brampton, Ont. will demonstrate how a residence can achieve net-zero design while also being affordable.
The initiative—led by the Peel Housing Corporation in collaboration with Montgomery Sisam Architects—aims to provide high-quality, cost-effective housing for low-income residents. Montgomery Sisam Architects was retained by the Peel Housing Corporation to advance the municipality’s 10-year plan and design Chelsea Gardens, an additional affordable residential building on property that currently has two existing affordable housing towers, located at 10 Knightsbridge Rd. near Queen Street and Central Park Drive
The new building is 20 storeys and 161,932 square feet and will infill a half-acre parcel of underutilized green space on the north part of the property. The existing site has 250 suites spread across two buildings and this will add 200 more.
The building’s design focuses on breaking down its massing into interconnected volumes, combining aluminum standing seam systems and masonry blocks with wood-look metal soffits. This approach aims to reduce the structure’s verticality and enhance its pedestrian-friendly appeal.
Inside, the ground floor will feature varied ceiling heights and floor-to-ceiling windows in the lobby, along with shared amenity spaces. The use of exposed concrete and warm white mahogany aims to contribute to a serene atmosphere.
The design also includes a library, a communal kitchen, an outdoor play area for children, and a meeting room for resident events. Moreover, the project aims to achieve net-zero energy status through a high-performance building envelope, a geothermal loop with a distributed heat pump system, energy recovery on most ventilation systems, a 20 per cent window-to-wall ratio, and ultra-low flow fixtures.
This project is also targeting Zero Carbon Design certification under the Canada Green Building Council’s (CAGBC’s) Zero Carbon Building: Design Standard Version 3 and adhering to the Region of Peel’s Net Zero Emission (NZE) Building Standard for New Construction.
The building will also undergo a climate resilience risk assessment and will comply with the City of Toronto’s Minimum Backup Power Guidelines for Multi-Unit Residential Buildings (MURBs), ensuring 72 hours of backup power and thermal energy for essential building systems and a central refuge area.
Projecting a 41 per cent decrease in energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions relative to the 2015 National Energy Code for Buildings (NECB), Chelsea Gardens is eligible to receive the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CHMC) co-investment fund.
