Life on Land Projects Underway

Students were introduced to the UN SDG Life on Land through sessions focused on the subcategories of biodiversity, desertification, and deforestation. Each student selected one of these three subcategories for their individual projects. Students conducted pre-search to further narrow their research topic. After organizing and processing their pre-search notes, students used their new knowledge to develop research questions to drive their research.

This week, students have had the option to attend one of two leaving-to-learn experiences where they have conducted on-site field experiments at either Pharis Farms or the site of the proposed Montage development near LNHS. For this project, students will create a review of literature that will synthesize the information they learned through their research and proposes what they consider to be the best possible solution to a specific issue. Next, they will create an artifact and an artifact defense that will require them to justify their selected artifact message, medium, and audience. Parents and community members will have the opportunity to explore the products of this project at the Fall exhibition night in November.

Schedule a Fall Parent-Teacher Conference

Parents, we would like for you to join us for Fall Conferences and our Fall Exhibition! Our Fall Conferences include an opportunity to meet with your student's Village teacher on Tuesday, October 18th, for an update on their progress in all EDGE coursework. Conferences will take place in person at EDGE, which is located in the View at Liberty High School. Conferences are by appointment only, and should be scheduled using the My Conference Time website. In order to accommodate all EDGE parents, please schedule one conference with your student's Global Activism (aka Village) teacher. The My Conference Time website will open for scheduling on Tuesday, October 4th at 8am. Visit https://www.myconferencetime.com/libertyhs/ to schedule a conference.

Additionally, we would like for you to join us for our Fall Exhibition, which is an opportunity to see your student's project work. Fall Exhibition will take place on November 16th. We will share more information about Exhibition as we get closer to that date.

Progress Updates in PowerSchool

We are grateful that our LPS PowerSchool team has been working hard to create a way for us to report progress in PowerSchool using our EDGE assessment scale. Our teachers just got PowerSchool access to begin updating progress using the scale and will be hard at work to update your student's progress before fall conferences.

Once progress is updated, you will notice student progress is reported using the following PowerSchool codes. Here is what they mean:

TRA (Transferring) or DEM (Demonstrating) indicate your student is showing command of those learning skills. They are ahead or on track in these areas!

APP (Approaching) or BEG (Beginning) indicate your student is making progress toward this skill and will continue to work in this area in order to get to Demonstrating or Transferring. Most students progress through all phases of this scale as they work toward competency. At this point, students are on track if they have indicators of APP or BEG, but it's important they make continual progress with these skills.

IE (Insufficient Evidence) or NA (Not Attempted) are indicators of concern and mean your student is not on track with learning progress.

We're excited about the opportunity to travel to Guatemala from March 10 - 16, 2023, and we've created a page on our EDGE website with the information about the trip. You can access it here.

If your student is planning on participating in this opportunity, we would encourage them to get registered ASAP so we can begin getting a count on the number of travelers. Registration and a $250 deposit is due on 10/31/2022 to secure your spot; visit our Squads Abroad page to register and pay your deposit.

Please note the next Guatemala Fundraising Planning meeting has been rescheduled. The meeting will now take place on Thursday, October 13th from 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm. You can attend in person in The EDGE space at Liberty High School or join via zoom.
