The International Day of Peace in San Francisco 2024

It was a Day of Celebration, Honoring the Past, Embracing the Now, and Activating a Pathway to the Future

So, Where Do We Go From Here?

40 years ago, in 1984, people gathered on the lawn across from City Hall in San Francisco for an event that honored and commemorated the passage of the resolution establishing the UN International Day of Peace in 1981. This gathering was organized by Pathways To Peace, was collaborative and inclusive, included over 50 countries, and launched the PeaceWave: A Minute of Silence and Moment of Peace at Noon in Every Time Zone.

That PeaceWave, honored at that first International Day of Peace gathering in San Francisco by a crowd of dedicated peacebuilders, became a global movement. And that Peace Day movement now engages 3 billion people worldwide!

September 18, 1984, was the first major civil society celebration of the UN International Day of Peace in Civic Center Plaza in San Francisco.

Pathways To Peace felt that the 40th anniversary of the first Peace Day gathering in San Francisco was worthy of celebration!

Together, with support from so many partners,

Peace Day in San Francisco took Place on September 21, 2024!

On the International Day of Peace (Peace Day), September 21st, 2024, Pathways To Peace returned to the City Center Plaza, the site of the Peace Day celebration 40 years ago, to host a 40th Anniversary Peace Day Celebration. In addition to an outdoor staged event with spectacular performers and tabling organizations with interactive activities for audience members, our San Francisco Celebration was central to a 24-hour Global Broadcast – produced by Hubcast Media!

We came together to not only celebrate the future and to recognize how far the peacebuilding community has come, but also to lay the groundwork for the next evolution of our work for Peace!

Along with so many others, we recognize the time is NOW for us to come together on behalf of our common humanity to create Peace on Earth by activating a Culture of Peace for all!

There are so many people to acknowledge and thank – you all know who you are! We are deeply grateful to our Core Planning Team Members, Our Primary Sponsor – 24 Hour Pause for Peace, Our Angel Contributor – Council Member Erica Schneekloth, our sponsoring organizations and individual contributors – and so many more!

Where Do We Go From Here?

Peace Day 2024 San Francisco gave us a platform for the next evolution of our Peacebuilding movement and deeper connections with some core partners that will be essential in our collective commitment to activating the Culture of Peace and co-creating a world that works for all. The following are some of those next-step activities—please join our partners!

Pathways To Peace is so honored to have 24 Hour Pause for Peace as our Peace Day 2024 Sponsor – and we’re so delighted to be partnering in this exciting 2025 initiative! Jennifer McKenna, CEO of 24 Hour Pause for Peace, will be sharing about the initiative and how you can become involved in two virtual informational meetings:

If you attended Peace Day 2024 in person, you’ll remember singing Happy Birthday to Jennifer from our stage.

Stephen Fantl, a longtime Peacebuilder and Pathways To Peace partner brought the L.O.V.E. Pod technology to power our WIFI signal for our Peace Day Celebration at the Civic Center Plaza on September 21st, 2024. The Plaza is notorious as a challenging venue for internet connection, and the L.O.V.E. Pods performed beautifully! This safe, innovative, affordable, green technology allows anyone anywhere to access the internet, even in emergencies! As Stephen said … https://youtu.be/YyFA19myX64

Pathways To Peace is hosting an informational meeting to take a “Deeper Dive” into the L.O.V.E. Pod technology and opportunities for collaborative fundraising for peacebuilding organizations:
