Historical Tidbit:
"Lady of the Lake"

There is a rumor that a vessel named "Lady of the Lake" sank in Silver Lake. This story is local folklore from over a century ago about the boiler of the "Lady of the Lake" exploding and sinking to the bottom of the lake.

Originally named the "Glide," the 52-foot steamer was propeller driven not the stern wheeler of legend. It was built in 1871 and spent one season steaming up and down the Merrimac River before being sold to a group of Plymouth businessmen. They put the craft on a run from North Dock in Plymouth to Captain's Hill in Duxbury. As this venture was not profitable, they turned to excursions at nearby Silver Lake.

In May of 1874, 16 pair of oxen pulled the "Glide" through the streets of Plymouth and Kingston, through Harrub's Corner in Plympton down to Silver Lake. The newly named "Lady of the Lake" proved to be a very popular attraction. From her decks passengers could get the best view of another big attraction of the day, rowing regattas.

Federal boiler inspection at that time was limited to boats using coastal and river waters. The "Lady's" boiler had not been inspected since the vessel became landlocked. And on that sunny, summer day the boiler tore loose with a terrific burst of steam, shot through the decks and arched into the water. Nineteen people were hurt in the explosion. Three of the victims died from their injuries. While the "Lady" never sank, she slowly rotted for 30 years, tied to a dock for an ice company that later used the water of Silver Lake.
*Information for this story was taken from an old newspaper article found in a scrapbook belonging to my grandfather, Guy S. Baker.

Climate Can Do: Updating Massachusetts' Bottle Bill for a Greener Future

In 1983, Massachusetts launched the Bottle Bill, encouraging recycling with a $0.05 deposit on soda and beer containers. It worked well, cutting litter and boosting aluminum, plastic, and glass recycling. But times have changed, and this old bottle bill needs a modern makeover.

Two new bills are now before the Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities, and Energy and aim to refresh the Massachusetts Bottle Bill, addressing the challenges posed by today's beverage consumption habits and recycling issues.

The Proposed Expansion

Bill H.3676: An Act to Update the Bottle Bill. This bill seeks to modernize the Bottle Bill to meet current needs.

Bill H.3690/SB2104: An Act to Expand the Bottle Bill. This bill aims to broaden the Bottle Bill's coverage to include any drinkable liquid intended for human consumption.

Expanding the Bottle Bill aligns with today's beverage choices. The original law covered soft drinks, mineral water, beer, and malt beverages—products of a bygone era. Today, our options include bottled water, flavored waters, coffee-based drinks, juices, and sports drinks, which the outdated bill doesn't include. This gap has led to more litter and waste.

Updating the definition of "beverages" in the Bottle Bill removes this confusion. It's simple: water, flavored waters, iced teas, coffee-based drinks, and sports drinks should now have a $0.05 deposit. This expansion is expected to generate about $20 million in new revenue, with $5 million going to the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA). EEA will use these funds for various initiatives, such as municipal recycling incentives, recycling transfer stations, source reduction, and public education.

How To Support The Bottle Bill Expansion

To bring about this change, contact your elected officials and let them know you want to see Massachusetts' Bottle Bill improved by House Bill 3676 and House Bill 3690/SB2104. The Conservative Law Foundation has made it even easier to reach out with a prewritten letter available for the public’s use here.

Halifax Congregational Church Provides Lunch for Habitat for Humanity Workers

The Greater Plymouth Habitat for Humanity sent a shout out of thanks to the Halifax Congregational Church for providing lunch and boosting morale.

The church and their "Friendly Circle" sent over brown bag lunches, with inspirational and thoughtful quotes written on the front to keep spirits high. On a chilly day working outside for hours, sandwiches and homemade soup really hit the spot!

An Unfinished Democracy

Here, from the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in Cambridge is Amanda Gorman.

Poet, Visionary.

I am as mesmerized by her words as by her hand motions. Her delivery is so beautiful, it's captivating. Amanda brings us a clear hopeful message as she binds us all together to finish the work our founders started.

Even though the below poem was written for the Boston Pops, fireworks and Independence Day, it rings true for today and everyday. "Not to look at American Democracy as something that is broken, but as something that is unfinished."
We all have work to do. And that starts in our communities, home towns and neighborhoods and our vote. Everyday.
Thank you for all you do, dear reader, it's a choice we make, our democracy. We move forward, together.~ Jacquie
