MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT DAISY COCCO DE FILIPPIS

Dear Colleagues and Students,

I am happy to share my remarks for yesterday's recognition tea.

President’s Recognition Tea in Honor of Women’s History Month

March 26, 2026

During Women’s History Month, we gather not only to remember but to affirm the extraordinary legacy of women whose intellect, courage, and creativity have shaped the soul of this nation. There are centuries of achievement to look back at and take pride in – a rich tapestry of the arts and sciences woven by American women.

And yet, as the great poet Julia de Burgos reminds us, “Yo misma fui mi ruta”—I myself was my path. The past is not a distant country—it is a living force. It calls us to reflection, yes, but also to action. It urges us to bring forward the wisdom of those who came before us, so that we may stand more firmly in our own purpose.

That is why we are gathered this afternoon: to recognize and uplift our Hostos students, who embody persistence and resilience in the pursuit of their dreams. During this event, we celebrate the collective success of our students for their perseverance and for having chosen a journey of self-fulfillment by means of pursuing their education.

Thank you for your presence and your commitment. And my deepest gratitude to our keynote speaker, Ms. Marina Esquilín.

Mil gracias y bendiciones,

Daisy Cocco De Filippis, Ph.D.

President

POEM

Sonnet 98

By William Shakespeare

From you have I been absent in the spring,

When proud-pied April, dressed in all his trim,

Hath put a spirit of youth in everything,

That heavy Saturn laughed and leaped with him.

Yet nor the lays of birds, nor the sweet smell

Of different flowers in odour and in hue,

Could make me any summer’s story tell,

Or from their proud lap pluck them where they grew:

Nor did I wonder at the lily’s white,

Nor praise the deep vermilion in the rose;

They were but sweet, but figures of delight

Drawn after you, – you pattern of all those.

Yet seem’d it winter still, and, you away,

As with your shadow I with these did play.

President’s Initiatives Events and Opportunities

There is great news to share on recent events and new opportunities. These past two weeks, the Hostos Research Center (HRC) hosted three Colloquium Series presentations. The members of the HRC Steering Committee presented their recently published article examining the impact of the HRC on grantsmanship development at Hostos. Director Sofia Oviedo, Professor Yoel Rodriguez, and Professor Antonios Varelas shared the findings of their study and highlighted the positive ways that the HRC’s internal grants have fostered the development of new research and interventions that address institutional and community needs. The second presentation featured Professor Inmaculada Lara-Bonilla from the Humanities Department and Coordinator of the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Unit, who discussed the important contributions of Latina literary authors to theory and philosophy and, more specifically, her ADELANTE-funded research on Giannina Braschi’s Putinoika (2024). Lastly, on March 24, the HRC hosted Professor Kristen Tran from the Behavioral and Social Sciences Department, who presented findings from her ethnographic study that examined the influence of faith on academic success.

The application cycle for the 2026-27 NextGen Public Health Scholars 2+2+2 Program is officially open. Last week, we hosted an Information Session with our partners from Columbia University, and a good number of students were in attendance who were very interested in this incredible opportunity. The scholarship program provides selected students seeking to make a difference as a public health professional with full financial support, mentorship, and career development guidance to complete their studies at Hostos and pursue their bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Columbia University. Click here for the application. The deadline to apply is May 15, 2026.

Hostos Hosts Bronx College Fair with Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson

On March 11, Hostos Community College, in conjunction with Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson and her Higher Ed Task Force, hosted the 2026 Bronx College Fair.  In total, 740 students from 25 high schools and middle schools attended to explore their college options and begin planning this important step in their futures.  Colleges from across the borough were represented, providing information tables and workshops to students, including our own beloved Hostos Community College.  We will no doubt see some of those students again in the not-too-distant future.  Thank you to all who participated and helped make this event a success.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month

In April, we acknowledge the importance of Sexual Assault Awareness Month (“SAAM”).  This month serves as a reminder of our collective responsibility to promote safety, respect, and support for survivors within our community.  Sexual assault remains a pervasive issue affecting individuals of all genders, backgrounds, and identities.  It is incumbent upon each of us to stand in solidarity against such violence and work toward creating a culture of consent, respect, and accountability.  On April 13, in the Atrium, we will be hosting Enough is Enough Coordinator Leah Stone, from the Bronx District Attorney’s Office Crime Victims Assistance Bureau, who will be disseminating critically important information related to New York State Education Law Articles 129-A & B, affirmative consent, and healthy relationships.  We encourage members of our campus community to stop by the Atrium on April 13, between the hours of 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., to visit the Bronx D.A.’s table and speak with Leah Stone.

In recognition of this issue, Hostos Community College celebrates Denim Day on April 29.  Wear your favorite denim on April 29, in honor and support of victims of sexual assault and other forms of gender-based violence. Make sure to tag any pictures on social media using the hashtag #CUNYDenimDay. If anyone has old denim they no longer wear, consider cutting it into pieces and attaching safety pins to it. This can be a denim ribbon for people who cannot wear denim on Denim Day.  Together, we can make a difference and contribute to building a future free from sexual violence.

Thank you for your commitment to creating a campus culture that values respect, equity, and safety for all.

Hostos C/STEP Program Represented at the Bronx-Manhattan C/STEP Expo

Submitted by Diandra Jugmohan, Co-Director, C/STEP & Proyecto Access

The 9th Annual Bronx-Manhattan C/STEP Expo took place at John Jay College of Criminal Justice on Saturday, March 15, 2026, bringing together more than 300 participants for a day of student research, academic exchange, and networking. Mrs. Diandra Jugmohan, Co-Director of the Hostos C/STEP program and an Expo committee member, supported student presenters and connected with partner institutions. The event showcased five research projects presented by six dedicated Hostos students, highlighting the creativity, innovation, and scholarly accomplishments of students across the C/STEP community.

Hostos Community College had a strong presence at the event, with ten undergraduate students, four faculty members, and staff in attendance. Faculty participants included Professors Rodriguez and Ivanova from the Natural Sciences Department and Professors Nieto-Wire and Lgarch from the Mathematics and Computer Science Department. Hostos was also represented at the college fair by Ms. Destiny Gonzalez, an Enrollment Specialist from the Admissions Department.

The Expo provided an excellent opportunity for students to share their research, receive valuable feedback from faculty and peers, and build meaningful connections within the Bronx-Manhattan C/STEP region. Overall, the event celebrated student achievement and highlighted the importance of research in preparing underrepresented students for advanced study and careers in STEM and health-related fields.

Course Registration Opens on Monday, March 30

Course registration opens for continuing students on Monday, March 30. All faculty and staff are encouraged to inform their students about the importance and the benefits of enrolling early. When students enroll early, they can claim their preferred courses more easily, which helps them maintain their academic momentum. A supplementary enrollment communication campaign was launched through Navigate for all continuing students earlier this month. It consists of emails and text messages being sent periodically throughout the start of the Fall semester. Messaging is designed to encourage students to prepare for early registration, meet with their advisors, review their Degree Works, degree maps, and degree plans to identify the best path forward, and enroll in courses for both summer and fall 2026. Students who enroll early can receive a voucher for a free ice cream cone. Mr. Softee will be on campus to celebrate early enrolled students on Wednesday, April 15. Please spread the word!

Transfer Services

Walk the campus. Picture the future.

This semester, the Office of Transfer Services has already taken students on tours to Mercy University and York College, and the response has been consistent: visiting a campus in person helps students make better, faster, and more confident decisions about where they’re headed next. That moment when a student steps onto a campus for the first time — sees the library, the weight room, the recording studio — and starts to imagine themselves there. That’s not a small thing. That’s a future clicking into place.

Our tours this semester have also included students from the Melissa Riggio Higher Education Program, an AHRC New York City program right here at Hostos that supports students with intellectual and developmental disabilities in accessing college life. Their staff chaperone, a full-time Hostos student who also works, made these tours possible for the Melissa Riggio students — and in doing so, got to walk those campuses herself for the first time. One door opened for many.

Like many offices across campus, we’ve had to make hard decisions this year — rethinking resources, redistributing people power, and figuring out what we can sustain and what we have to let go. When our Assistant Director, Samantha Maldonado, was asked what was non-negotiable — what we would find a way to keep no matter what — her answer was immediate: campus tours. Because she’s seen what happens when a student who has never had the chance to visit a college campus finally gets to walk one. It changes how they see their future.

We have four more tours this semester — two to Lehman College, one to John Jay College, and one to Baruch College — and we want your students there.

Sign up here.

Please share this with students who are thinking about transferring. Questions? Reach out to the Office of Transfer Services at 718-518-4427.

Non-Marketplace Purchase Requisitions Deadline

As we prepare to end the 2026 Fiscal Year on June 30, 2026, kindly take note of the following important date. The last day to submit fully-approved and valid budget-checked Non-Marketplace Purchase Requisitions in CUNYBuy is Friday, April 10, 2026 at 5 PM.

Requisitions entered in the CUNYBuy eProcurement system after this date are subject to rejection. This deadline does not affect any purchases intended to be paid from Research Foundation, Hostos Community College Foundation funding, and CUNYBuy Marketplace (Complete Books, Edge Electronics, NYSID & NYSPSP) requisitions.

Note: Equipment, furniture, or other items that cannot be delivered or rendered by June 30, 2026 will be processed in FY 2027. Please check and confirm with your suppliers that all goods and services will be delivered by June 30, 2026 before submitting your requisition in the system.

Timely submission of all requisitions will ensure purchases are charged to the appropriate budget categories and the College receives all goods/services that require a lead time of approximately six to eight weeks before June 30, 2026. Goods/services received by the College after June 30, 2026 cannot be charged to the FY 2025-2026 budget, as per the City of New York and CUNY’s procurement regulations. Additionally, once goods/services are received, it is imperative that departments submit their Receiving Reports in a timely manner to facilitate payments to vendors. All invoices received must be forwarded to the Accounts Payable Office immediately for processing.

This is to ensure the Office of Procurement can begin year-end closing, the process of completing the financial activity for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2026 as mandated by the City of New York and CUNY. It is imperative all college departments adhere to this deadline so the Office of Procurement can complete the fiscal year year-end process effectively and efficiently.

Thank you for your cooperation and attention to this important date.
