What is it like to spend the holiday at Holden Village? In the depths of fall and winter, the Village comes alive with vibrancy and warmth. Guests from all across the country make their annual pilgrimage to the mountains to reconnect with loved ones and recall the traditions they celebrated in years past.
This was especially true this Thanksgiving, where nearly one hundred traveled to Holden to share and enjoy the season of gratitude. Visitors were treated to a full array of programmatic activities. On Wednesday, roughly 25 volunteers made over twenty pumpkin and apple pies for “Pie Palooza.” No prior experience was necessary— just a love of pie! Numberless hands labored so that we may eat. From succulent turkey to crisp green-bean casserole, we were thankful for everyone’s contributions in the kitchen on Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving Day began with the Tatanka Trot 5k & 2k. More than a run, the Tatanka Trot is a gathering to celebrate Indigenous empowerment and to honor and recognize their history and land. Holden joined the virtual event alongside participants from across the country. Runners were encouraged to donate to Siċaŋġu Co, which aims to improve the financial and social well-being of Siċaŋġu Lak̇ota nation. (You can read about other causes Holden Village is supporting below.)
For many of us, it would not be Thanksgiving without football. The annual “Copper Bowl” game pitted “Saints” against “Sinners” in a hilarious flag football game on the snow-covered Village Green. When not dodging the opposing team, players had to dodge snowballs from the sidelines. (Saints beat Sinners 21-14).
Thanksgiving is just one example of how Holden draws people into relationships through shared stories and passion. We hope you can join us next Thanksgiving—or any of the upcoming holidays in the Village. You can explore some of the December offerings in this newsletter. Your presence makes the Village more complete.
