In Memory of Pam James, CMP

t is with great sadness I share with you the loss of my dear friend and colleague, fellow CMP and MPI member, Pam. We met approximately 20 years ago as members and volunteers at MPI New Jersey. We served on the board together, and both were chapter presidents. Pam was the person who introduced me to Atlantic City. She was one of the proudest advocates of the city, and the evolution it was going through. First with Tropicana, and then with Resorts, she was an incredible sales person.
‌
She was funny and sarcastic, had the best facial expressions (no one can roll their eyes like her) and laugh, and would flick her always perfectly manicured hands (with some significant nails!) to emphasize. She would show up to board meetings in zebra striped jackets and matching shoes, at a time when sales people were in very traditional black, navy and grey. Passionate and excellent golfer. Heart as big as anyone you ever met.

My November New Jersey CMP class was outside of Atlantic City, and she decided to come. She figured it gave her recertification hours, thought she would learn something, and to hang out with me. This picture is from the site tour the class went on. Not the fanciest or best picture of either of us, but turns out the last day we would see each other. Maybe it is the best picture after all.

The Slow Disappearance of the Hotel Shower Door
Conde Nast Traveler
I remember the first time I ran into one of these 14 years ago. I was totally perplexed. Should I call the front desk? Where do I slide it to---near the shower head or towards the other end where the water tends to splash the most? I did finally call, and they admitted they got the question often and no it was not “broken” , and it was a European style.
I have mixed feelings about them when I walk in and see them. I agree with a lot of what they are talking about in the article, especially cleanliness. I have been in them where water (and steam) ended up everywhere. Recently I was in one that was not a problem at all, because it had a rain head shower that could not be adjusted, so it was straight down.
Do you care when you see them in a property you are considering for your meetings? Depending on who you are attendees are, the majority may not have seen them. Are you prepared for the questions? Are you prepared for the social media? Or maybe it doesn’t bother you at all.

Can Hotels do More to Fight Human Trafficking?
Skift
It’s around those of us who travel, in hotels and are at large events (including concerts, sporting events and even the state fair).
What can all of us do? It’s like we hear all the time for safety—if you see something, say something. I realized a few months ago I missed something, and it is still on my mind. On the other hand it made me more aware moving forward.

Where In the US are Hourly Workers Getting a Raise?
CBS News
Do you hire hourly workers in other states to work on site? Not being aware of how varied minimum wage is, and how much it is changing every year, could be a real budget buster.

Cruise Ship Food and Beverage: Always Evolving MPI
Great short piece by Rayna Katz, on Le Petit Chef, a dining experience that was part of the CMP at Sea class. You may remember that I was psyched about it and put a link to a video in a prior newsletter.

Every Type of Non Plastic Straw Ranked
Buzzfeed

Their title not mine. First of all, I have had paper straws that are very durable and work fine. They are not the paper straws of long ago that were disintegrating half way through your drink---what a mess with milkshakes (or Frappes since I live in Massachusetts). Also, recently I was at a restaurant and I asked what the straw was, assuming it was bamboo, and it was made from avocado (pits). Who knew? There is a picture of it on my Instagram @themeetguide.

Best Luggage Brands for Every Type of Traveler
Harpers Bazaar
Maybe there is one for me here, but I do know it is not the $2000 one. I do kind of like the one that looks like it already got run over by a truck. It eliminates the disappointment of the first scratch, dent or rip in your new suitcase.

Airports and Airlines Want Travelers to Ditch Their Plastic Water Bottles CNBC

San Francisco Airport banned selling plastic water bottles last year. This article is very interesting in what different airlines and airports around the world are doing to eliminate single use plastics. Edible cups anyone?

Automatic Tipping: Travelers Beware
USA Today

I am a proponent of a non-tipping world, or at least by choice, not expectation. I want servers (and hair stylists, and manicurists…etc) to receive appropriate pay for the work they do. It should not be at the customers whim, no more than we should be expected to leave a tip when there has been little to no service. Tips can be confusing and embarrassing, frustrating, hurtful and can ruin relationships with those you go out to dinner with. I have been with bad tippers—some out of ignorance (or bad math skills), some for other reasons. Ok off that soapbox, at least for today.

My Two-Day Intensive Classes

Registration is open for all classes!

Classes are scheduled at most once in a geographical area, per exam cycle. These are the remaining spring classes.  Most of these will not be held again until at least fall. There will most likely be summer classes in New England and New Jersey. If you are thinking of taking the exam in August or November this year, and are looking to take advantage of the “Pay Once, Take Twice” option, you need to start by taking a spring class. It will show you what you need to do to prepare, so you can make a plan very specific to you.

In Her Words...

I took your class about two years ago, hoping to take the CMP much sooner than I actually did (oh, life!!). I took the exam this morning and in studying, utilized the notes and strategies that you had provided to our class back in April 2017. The emphasis you had placed on framing the exam questions around goals and objectives has remained at the forefront of my mind all of this time, and I truly believe was critical to both my understanding of the material, and my passing this morning!

So thank you, thank you, for all that you did for me and continue to do for future CMP’s.

Better late than never!

Elizabeth CMP

Did you take the CMP in 2015? 2010? 2005? 2000? 1995?...

It is your year to re-certify—DO NOT miss it! You must complete your 25 continuing education hours by December 31 or you cannot re-certify. And I know you don't want to take the test again.
