The newsletter for St. Mark's UMC in Murfreesboro, TN | | "The Messenger" Online Newsletter | | |
Sisters & Brothers,
I would like to update you on our transition to Murfreesboro. First, the gifts, many volunteers, and staff of St. Mark’s are making this transition smooth and heartwarming. We cannot thank you enough for the outpouring of love we are experiencing.
The Lord willing, we will move out of our home in Tullahoma on Friday, July 24. Thanks to warm invitations, we have a place to stay. We then close on our Tullahoma home Tuesday, July 28, and we close on our new Murfreesboro home July 30. If all goes well, we will be Murfreesboro residents by the end of this month. We still have much to do with moving out, storage, moving in, et cetera. We also have those tasks of ending utilities and establishing new utilities and so on. I am so thankful for the wonderful staff and volunteers; they are keeping things in good order as I work through these necessary items. Becky and I look forward to getting settled in Murfreesboro and engaging in the many activities and ministries of St. Mark’s.
Becky and I continue to ask for your prayers as we move through this transition. Lord willing, we will bring this transition to a close soon. We are ready to do just that!
God bless,
Rick

The Next Chapter - Investing in St. Mark's Future
For years, the St. Mark's community has faithfully answered God's call to worship, serve, and care for our neighbors. Every ministry we celebrate, from caring for children and youth, to supporting missions and caring for those in need, is made possible through the grace of God and the generosity and commitment of this congregation. As we look to the future, we have an opportunity to build upon that legacy in a meaningful way.
Retiring our remaining mortgage is about much more than paying off a loan. It is about freeing resources so they can be invested where they matter most, in ministry, mission, and the people God calls us to serve. Each month, more than $9,000 is dedicated to mortgage payments. Imagine the impact those resources could have when directed toward expanding ministries, caring for our facilities, responding to emerging needs in our community, and strengthening the mission of St. Mark's for years to come.
Recently, our mortgage interest rate adjusted from 3% to 6.5%. Paying off the remaining balance would save St. Mark's approximately $156,000 in future interest expense over the life of the loan. Those are dollars that could remain here, supporting ministry, serving our neighbors, and helping us continue to be the hands and feet of Christ.
Becoming debt-free would also strengthen our ability to care for the church campus that serves our members, visitors, and community. As our buildings continue to age, routine maintenance and capital improvements become increasingly important. A stronger financial position allows us to address these needs proactively while remaining prepared for new opportunities God may place before us.
Most importantly, retiring the mortgage is an investment in the future of St. Mark's. It is a way of ensuring that future generations inherit a church that is financially healthy, mission-focused, and ready to continue sharing Christ's love throughout our community. It is one more way we can faithfully build upon the foundation laid by those who came before us and leave a legacy that will bless those who follow.
Together, we have the opportunity to eliminate the debt, free resources for ministry, and sustain the vision God has for St. Mark's. We invite you to prayerfully consider a gift beyond your regular giving to help us retire the debt and open the next chapter of ministry at St. Mark’s. Please be sure to note “Building Fund” on any gifts designated for debt retirement.
With Gratitude,
Skip Ruzicka
Finance Team Leader

Drive-Through Food Box Giveaway - 7/11/2026
Paul Givens and Karen Alexander applied last fall for a one-time $5,000 grant from Encore Ministry Foundation to be used to help St. Mark’s food ministry meet the expanding needs in the Murfreesboro community. We were notified in March of 2026 that we were going to be awarded the money.
Using the grant money and contributions from our St. Mark’s Local Food Ministry and Disaster Team, volunteers packed 288 food boxes of non-perishable food on July 7, 2026 and July 9, 2026. On July 11, 2026, St. Mark’s held the drive-through food box giveaway for the Murfreesboro community. Despite the torrential rain and heat, we were able to give away half of the boxes that day.
The remainder of the boxes will be distributed to the families of the Rutherford County Atlas Program (homeless students), the Truth Ministry (homeless individuals), recipients of the St. Mark’s Furniture Ministry, First Things First Sober Living Homes, and the St. Mark’s Local Food Box Ministry.
The Mission Team would like to thank all the volunteers who picked up the food for boxes in Lebanon, helped unload food and pack boxes, and helped distribute boxes at the drive-through!!

St. Mark's Community Blood Drive - Filling the Need!
One of the simplest ways we can share Christ's love with our neighbors is by giving the gift of life. St. Mark's United Methodist Church, in partnership with the American Red Cross, invites you to participate in our Community Blood Drive on Saturday, August 22, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary Foyer.
Every blood donation has the potential to help save multiple lives, bringing hope to patients undergoing surgery, receiving cancer treatments, recovering from accidents, and facing other medical emergencies. We invite you to prayerfully consider being part of this important ministry of compassion and care.
Please reserve your donation time today by clicking here: https://www.redcrossblood.org/give.html/drive-results?zipSponsor=stmarksmboro
Together through this partnership with the American Red Cross, our St.Mark's family can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

Support the Mission Through Faithful Summer Giving
At St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, our mission of Making Disciples of Jesus Christ continues throughout every season of the year. Even during the slower pace of summer, the ministry of the church remains active through worship, children and youth programs, missions, pastoral care, and ongoing outreach to our community. While schedules change and many families travel during the summer months, the work of the church continues week after week.
Summer often brings a decline in attendance and giving, yet the financial responsibilities of the church remain steady. Ministry programs, mission commitments, staffing, and facility operations continue regardless of the season. Faithful giving during the summer helps ensure that St. Mark’s remains strong, stable, and fully engaged in serving others both within our congregation and throughout the community.
One of the easiest and most convenient ways to continue supporting the mission of the church while away is through our secure electronic giving system. Included are simple instructions for setting up a personal account, along with information outlining the many flexible ways financial gifts may be shared through St. Mark’s. If you have questions or would like assistance finding the giving option that works best for your situation, please contact Buddy Howell in the church office.
Thank you for your continued generosity and for the many ways you help sustain the life, ministry, and mission of St. Mark’s throughout the year!
